Is it UPS or USPS? I just had one shipped USPS. The sender marked it Stereo Equipment. If it's marked "gift" you don't have to pay GST/PST. I don't think Canada Customs cares about receivers. A friend carried one across on a plane last year. Customs didn't bat an eye.
They really don't care yet !
Writing Gift on it does save you some money and hastle , if there is a problem you can say well I didn't know I was getting it , my friend sent it as a gift and visa versa ...
Stereo Equipment is a good idea , if there is a card with it make sure the card is mailed seperate in an envelope ...

Last time I shipped items to Canada by UPS I was required to fill out an invoice for the goods. Even when I sent as a gift they required an invoice for the goods to demonstrate the value, not as a bill to the recipient. Apparently, even a gift can be taxed if it has sufficient value, but my shipment never was. The UPS shipping program I use can generate an invoice to satisfy the requirement, and that is supposed to be placed in a stick-on envelope, unsealed, in duplicate, as I recall. When the merchandise is taken to UPS or a shipping service they should be able to fill out all the required forms.

The trouble with UPS to Canada is that they nail us Canadians with a "brokerage fee", usually $25 and up. Whenever I get something shipped up here I try to get the sender to use USPS.
