Welcome to our site, warcow!
First off, what you heard is right...(x)000 IRD's are not a good model to test with (no jtag port). However, if the card has not been in the satellite data stream in the last few years, there is a good chance it's unlocked! To verify, connect IRD to TV only (not the 'Satellite in' cable!!!). Then go to 'Sys Info' screen (menu, 6, 1, 3). Now look for the 'DNASP003RevXXX.....
If it's Rev372 - it's unlocked
If it's Rev380 or 381 - it's stream locked. Can be sent to dealer for unlocking.

The "yellow"cards are of no use at the moment for testing on bev....dish yes and yes subbing the ird is a very good idea as without us subbing there would be no testing for us to do.
Don't be cheap and not sub!

Yes it's what is refered to as a yellow card. I understand you can do them but the cam in the 3000 will be easier and more reliable to test with. The 301 receiver will have to be jtagged and the vid mod done though for the 3000 cam to work in it.
On a side note was your friend testing the 3000. If so it may be unlocked even if it says it's a 380 or 381 revision as blockers spoof the revision number. So the best method is to stick it in a iso reader and do a read in nagraedit to see if the backdoor is still open.
"P.S. I am also thinking of hookin the sat up to this reciever and subbing it...good idea?"
Always a good idea to have a backup in the testing hobby. Especially if you want to watch tv while waiting for the latest fix. Or if it all goes belly up and you can no longer test them. Then you can just increase your basic sub and your good to go.
