Ryan711 that question cannot be answered until you decide what method you want to test with.

First you need to decide what testing method you will use then we can help.

Also need more info on the 301. Is it a 301 or a 301-010 or a 301-013?

Whatever testing method you choose you will need:

jkeys software
A buffered jtag. Has to be a buffered for a 301 (any version) a simple one won't work.

Next is some searching and reading to decide what testing method is right for you.

EMU (emulator) types: Dostoad, CEMU, WinCEMU etc.
Plastic: using a dish card (often called a cam) rom2, rom3, rom10, or rom101 etc.
romx: Basically the same as plastic testing but using a romx instead of a DN cam.
Atmega: Uses you current cam or no cam for testing.

Those are the most common. Each requires different equipment to make them work.

Atmega is as reliable as anything else. From what I have read about it (never used it myself) hits are more often then other methods. But fixes are generally posted fairly quick.

As far as I know all methods get hit including the rev card. Subbed or not you still get hit.

You have a rom101 or 102. Sometimes mistakenly reffered to as a rom11. Sometimes also called a yellow card.

You can determine the receiver model by the white sticker on the back. It will have DP301-XXX. The X's will be the type of 301. No number means a 301. With a yellow card you most likely have a 301-013. You will have to do a vid mod on that type for most testing methods. Check the Sticky posts. Vid mod info is there. Also pick up the dish newbie guide. It covers most of these questions.
