Used 063 with the rom 102 number for the reciever ( bk and ird # ) and an atmega with and old rom 3 number. with the same ird and bk for 102.

plugged in drive after flash

then let it stream to 304 with the atmega.

Both tsops get erased, only u7 gets reprogrammed, u6 is left blank to update by itself. As someone else mentioned a virgin eeprom needs to be written also. As I understand it.... updating a 501 to 120 gig needs a P079 flash version, earlier ones (P063) don't recognize the larger hard drives, they didn't exist back in the day when the earlier flash was written.

I did a 501 upgrade to a 120gig seagate just the other day, drove me nuts, kept getting hd errors, did the quick zero, remarry process, still hd errors. In despiration I moved the hd jumper from CS to master and it married right away and the errors went away, all works great.

So guys,
If i flash with p063, change ird# and boxkeys, it should marry? step by step satvia for 50x would be great.....doesnt hurt to ask....

Want to change from Tomico to Satvia, concerned about HD marrying when I change boxkeys....did 3900, all went smooth, but i guess 501 is a bit different

sorry to raise this thread from the dead, but I find myself in the position to replace the hard drive in my 501. I am not sure what the current rev is, but I have a copy of the flash at version P084. Will this work when I install the new 80 Gig drive?

Thanks

P084 was not virgin for the 501, so may or may not work, I think I use a P079 for some and P063 for others.

thanks Skinerd for the reply. I am just about to give up on this 501. what would be a big help is if you could clear up the meaning of virgin flash. I have made backups of my 501 in the past. I have the two flash files and eeprom files from P084, P223, P304 and P401. Can I make a virgin flash from what I have? I know I can use flashedit to make a virgin eeprom.

some background. I was having trouble with recoreded programs. It got that none of them would play back. I did the drive test and it always failed the read test. I purchased a new Maxtor 6L080L0 80 gig drive to upgrade from the 40 gig thats in it.

Writing to the U7 flash any of the flash files I have along with the virgin eeprom file I created with flashedit has not brought me any success. I just keep getting drive errors 04f4 and 04ee. My build sticker is DCED

I know it has to do with the files I am using, but I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I always thought I was smart enough to do this, but now I am not so sure. I have read 100's of posts and downloaded lots of files, but I am not sure where to start. I don't want to use just any files I find not know what I am doing or if they will work.

If you could clear up some of this for me, I would be very grateful.

Virgin flash is a flash that came on a factory new receiver. You cannot make one, it must have been saved from a new receiver.

A virgin eeprom can be generated, not a virgin flash.

In order to marry the drive, that specific drive model must be named in the flash, or you will get errors.

I do have some virgin flashes at P084, I don't know, but will check to see if there is a DCED in them. However, just to marry the drive, you can use ANY virgin flash, with the drive model listed in it, the receiver wont nescessarlly function, but the drive will marry, then it can be flashed with a correct flash for the receiver.

What I just stated may not be accurate 100%, a 6L080L0 drive may marry with any virgin flash but you will have errors until the receiver updates........so try that, load the virgin flash, then get video on previews, turn off receiver, let it update, see if errors go away. Or.....after loading a virgin flash, power receiver on, let the drive marry, then power down and flash it up to at least p304, then allow it to update.

6L080L0 does not appear in the flash until P304.

" 6L080L0 does not appear in the flash until P304"

Skinerd, I've always wondered what has to appear in the flash to make a Hard Disk work with the particular receiver ?

I always thought it would be fun to try to edit one to accept a bigger hard disk than the 120- but I dont believe its possible.

Unless the drive is listed in the flash, it will show errors, and not function.

It dont matter......as long as the build config is compatible, any 501/508/510 PVR flash will work fine.

Some use SKs and some dont, so figure out what you want to do or you will not get it working.

you are right, I can't seem to figure this out. I downloaded a virgin flash at P063, loaded it in Flashedit and changed the IRD#, Box Keys and Build to DCED and saved it. I then used the virgin eeprom option and created the eeprom file.

I then used jKeys to erase both flashes and then wrote the file I created to Flash2. I then wrote the eeprom file to the eeprom. I then connected it to the dish and TV and plugged it in. All I got was a lit green power led and red recording led for almost an hour. Figured something was wrong.

I looked at workmans drive list and saw that the drive I am using needs P087 or higher. I found a virgin P088 and did the same thing to make the files. Now the receiver come up and I can get to the menu, but no DVR functions or options in the menu. Also can't get a drive test to work either, so I guess the drive is still not married yet.

Is it possible with all that I have put this IRD through that the drive is now messed up and needs to be zeroed out? I was sold to me as new and came in the sealed anti-static bag. Sorry for all the trouble, but this one has me.

Virgin is just for marrying, PVR won't function until receiver updates.

let it update, or flash it up, then if no errors, it's married.

I keep getting the error that the receiver has not been authorised. I am guessing that means the drive is not married.

The process is to simple for me to have all this trouble. I am using the virgin flash at P088. I open it in Flashedit and change the IRD# and Boxkeys, I check fix CRC and them do a save as. Then I click on the script to make a virgin eeprom and enter the build of DCED, just whats on the sticker inside the receiver.

Then I use jKeys to erase both flashes, flash U7 with the bin file I created, then program the eeprom with its file. I then power everythimng off, connect the freshly erased 80 gig drive and then power everything back on. All I get on the screen of the TV is the sys info screen. I give it at least 15 minutes, then I power it off and back on and it again askes for me to insert my card, I do and it goes to the not authorised screen again.

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

one question, is the 129 not authorised message a result of the drive not marrying. After writing the virgin flash and eeprom to the receiver, I plugged in the freshly erased 80 gig drive. I power it on for 20 minutes. Then I connected it to the stream and insert the card. I leave it on for several hours. I find the its updated to p406 but I still have this error. any thoughts on this problem.

Success :D

not exactly sure why, but I believe it had something to do with the flash files I was using. I just started using different files until things started to change. The program wiem36 was also a big help cleaning the eeprom file.

Thanks to you and workmen for hanging in there with me and answering all my questions.
