Which receiver should I buy???

I wanted to get a new receiver. I was looking at the 301. What is the difference between the 010 model and the 013 model??? Which one already has the opening underneath the receiver for easy access with the j-tag???

Even though I like the look of the 301 I'm not set on getting a 301. Is there a receiver out there that would be easier for me to test with since I am a complete newbie to Dish???

Which card should I be looking for??? Is one easier to test than the other??? I just received a ROM 10x card. What do you guys think about the 10x??? I heard that the rom3 is best.

The 301.013 is the new version of the 301 and is suppose to be very difficult to test with. As far as accessing the Jtag you can get a Jtag reader that reads it from the top of the reciever. I just took the main board out of the reciever and cut out slot 1/2 inch wide and about 2 inches long. There is even a detailed drawing posted with the exact measurements.

I have a 301.13. Just have to do vid mod and jtag. Just some soldering required. I like the 301, But I haven't tested anything else So don't know. Also Not a pro like some other people. But lots of reading will do the trick oh and some patients.

I perfer the 301-010. The 013 is nice but the 010 can be converted to bev and the 013 can't. The 010 has another avantage over the 013. No vid mod required. The 010 has all the speed and features of the 013 but two versions were made. One with the cutout for the jtag and one without. But as stated it's not diffucult to make your own jtag hole in the case. Get a inexpensive Nibbler from Radio Shack. Makes cutting a rectangular hole in the case a breeze.

The easiest to test is the 2700 hands down. The best learning unit out there.
It takes a lot of abuse to kill a 2700 which makes it the perfect unit to learn on.

301 units are not as forgiving but have features far in excess of the 2700 capabilites.

If you want the features of a 301 with the bulletproof nature of the 2700 I would recommend the 3800 or 3900. Not as fast as the 301 but has all of the same features.
It can be converted to bev but the process is a bit more complicated. And you loose the features included on the 301 like dish home.
