Is there anybody that can help me out here... I've overheated the tiny jtag pads on a 430RG (6th generation) and pulled back the traces on a few of them.
Is there a way I can DIRECTLY attach the jtag to the FLASH chip or some other spot on the top of the circuit board? I'm pretty desperate here, I've tried over and over to fix the traces with no luck. I've even followed the trace up and connected to the next available pad... again no luck!
If anybody can help, thanks in advance!

Happened to me once. All you can do now is traced backward and find a pad and go from there.

just trace backwards towards that big OMEGA chip? it doesn't matter that the trace has been ruined (at least for an cm or so) as long as I put it further on down the same trace? I've tried a few different pads, with no luck.
There are no other contact points on the circuit board, such as the FLASH itself?
Thanks for the response.

I've tried following the traces upwards and attaching the jtag. I still can't get ANY response at all. Does someone have a diagram with alternative jtag points, a lot higher up on the board? If not, I guess I'm just royally screwed.

Skinerd is one of the experts in here and I recalled he said kind of the same thing I said (maybe he'll correct me if he reads this). Are you traceing with an Ohm meter, aren't you? In my case, I lifted one trace about an inch but I traced back, and confirmed it with the pin number on the big chip; it works. Anyway, good luck.

The jtag port on a 430 is relatively close to the CPU chip, and the pins on the CPU are very difficult to solder to, all traces except one have a small pad between the CPU and port that you can use to attach the jtag to. Really isn't that difficult if you can see it, I have a big magnifier lamp and have no trouble seeing.....

PROBLEM... ONE of the traces that I ruined, IS the one that doesn't have a pad until the OMEGA chip. I think I can make a good connection on ALL the others.
I believe it is pad 3 (2nd jtag wire) that doesn't have a pad between. Which pin on the OMEGA does that eventually lead to. I'm not an expert with a voltmeter.. I wouldn't even say I'm a beginner. l.o.l.
Thanks skinnderd and FreshMan!

if there is any of the trace left, and there must be, scrape it down to bare metal, carefully, then solder to that.

Probably unrelated, but should the Parallel Port settings be ECP+EPP in the BIOS?? I'd hate to get a good connection and have it go undetected!
If that's not the problem, then I give up on this receiver. I'm just messing up the traces even more.

here's an easy fix because this has happened to me once before and here's what I did:
break out a very thin sewing needle..the longer the better...solder a small wire to the end of the needle (i suggest 4 wire phone conductor-solid strand wire) and solder the other end to your lose JTAG cable (did you say #2?)..the one that you would have soldered to a test pad if you could have found one. then trace it back to the Omega chip and press down gently on the correct pin that it traces to on the Omega chip itself.
you may need to hold this for about 5 minutes because the 430 is a 4mb NOZKT file..so having someone help you as you enter commands in the developmental Panel is probably a better idea unless you are ambidexterous (spelling?)
we do the same thing with the RCA222..the old needle and wire trick..so its not as hard as it looks..just takes patience and dexterity
