View Full Version : Dave is trying to upgrade my software?!

I have a modded RCA430 receiver and when I turned it on this morning, I have a blank screen and a message that says "Upgrading your software, please wait. Do not unplug your receiver". Anyone else have this problem?
I have a 420 with a that is not being affected at the moment.
Also, I unplugged my receiver after waiting for a while and it won't even come on now!
I confirmed that it is not the script that is messing up the receiver (be it matched or unmatched group keys). Dave is doing something to 430s. I have had 4 confirmations so far from other people that their 430s are not powering on either.

I just got the same thing.
I understand Dave couldn't reach an agreement with OpenTV, the operators of Wink Interactive, (Dave's a cheap ass?) and is discontinuing the service.
I suspect this message is Dave rewriting the receiver firmware (flash) to disable Wink.
Problem is, I write-protected my flash. Not sure what the implications are here, but we may have to reflash after a newer version without Wink is posted.
I woke up to a black screen 430 also , thought it was just me , now it won't turn back on ....

If there are any other flash files which were not unwinked, they should also be affected. This would confirm the theory. The 430 is the only one I remember that was left winked, though. Anybody?
Also, anybody got an unmodded 430 they can throw in the stream to capture the new unwinked flash so we can get to work?

Not sure if it's the same or not but I notice the LED on my 420 flashing. I was going to come on here and find out if that's the case. So I guess it is but I still watch TVs though

It seems Dave has stopped upgrading 430s to version 000390208 but I don't think that means he won't try again in the near future. I hope someone was able to snag a copy of 000390208 and modify it for nozkt use.
I have friends with dead receivers waiting to get fixed but there is no point if Dave is going to stike again in a couple of days. Is anyone working on a nozkt for the new version or know where I can get it? Thanks.

Can't the 430's be re-flashed,then write protected?
It's kind of hard to beleive, but I honestly think this little ordeal with some nozkt's is due to the wink features being discontinued....which as 00 pointed out, were a waste of time and space anyway. No problems here with unwinked and nagless winked versions. (I had all wink features turned off with the nagless winked IRD's) I don't think this is an intentional hit on the nozkt's, it's just working out that way for some. I am sure that users like 4X4 that are having problems due to this will have a new file they can put on their rom's here shortly and then all should be well again.

This came from Skinerd to me, and is a quote from Unwink.com:
"There is a minor issue with the M29W320DB flash type found in some of the receivers. Apparently, the Flash write protect procedure doesn't work 100%. It appears as though the flash will erase even though it is write protected. This is an issue with the flash type, and there is no harware way to work around it. A simple firmware patch should be able to work around this issue. (I'm working on a fix now) This won't become a problem until the next time dtv sends down an update."

Pyotr,
Mine was write-protected to begin with. I have version 000390204 on my receiver and the attempted update messed it up. Before I start fixing firends 430s, I want to be sure that Dave does not re-attempt the update again. If I had a no-zkt version of the 00390208 software to put on the flash chip, I would feel more comfortable about withstanding another problem.

I noticed someupload a file in the no ZKY section called "DRD430/431 NOZKT firmware version 204 that pretends to be version 208". Does anyone know who uploaded it? Thanks to whom ever did! Hopefully this is the first step to getting a true nozkt version of 208. Thanks again!

Is there anyone is your house who could have changed the channel?
paapimp noted above that he had the message "There was an update that was unsuccessfull", which indicates the write protect on his IRD worked.
This message probably goes away when the channel is changed.
It looks like the update is out of the stream.
I wanted to take the update on my spare 430RG to find out if it overwrites the no-ZKT mod, or makes the IRD not accept a P3, or makes the IRD marry the card.
If it does none of these things, and I was left with an unwinked no-ZKT modded flash, I intended to hook up the JTAG and read the new flash and use it to replace the corrupted flash on my 430RGA.
I unsoldered the write protect jumper on the spare 430RG and so far nothing. I will leave it in the stream for a few more hours, (maybe overnight) but dave probably thinks he has already updatd everybody and there is no need to waste bandwidth sending this again.
Did anyone have a non write-protected 430 that took the update?

I am dead in the water myself. I would really like to get a flash AND eprom file from a receiver that took the update. If anyone has one, please let me know!
