I know a lot of receivers have the 9-pin COM port and I would imagine it has a purpose. I know there is a program that will run from your computer that functions as a remote control called dtvcon and uses the 9 pin com port on the receiver to the com port on the computer. Is there any way to reset the EEPROM or even flash the receiver via this COM port? I would think there could be many functions that could be performed via this port or is it like tits on a bull? Perhaps you could use hyper terminal in Windows to communicate with the IRD. Any thoughts

Depends on which receiver and which flash.
For example, Sonys had quite a few functions which could be performed by telnetting into the LSDP. On the A50, this was ended mid-model run. If you had the old flash, you could use the LSDP, if you had the newer flash, you could only view a couple of settings.
