newbiew help for 301 receiver

I am just moving over to dish. I have magic cards on order with 301 receivers also coming in. I have been reading to get a head start. My question is with a magic card, which mods need to be done to a 301 receiver. I have read both to lock the EEPROM and not to lock the EEPROM. There is also a Hard TSOP lock and a soft TSOP lock. Which is best? I assume the soft TSOP lock is the easiest but I am very capable to do a hardware lock if needed. There also seems to be several hardware tsop locks, which is the most flexable. All help would be greatly appreciated.
