View Full Version : Can't program Atmega128

This is really stupid but I keep on getting the "failed to enter program mode." I have the jumper on PROG. My port settings are the same between jeepers and Input/Output Range in windows. Even tried different settings. I'm running XP on both systems that I have tried on. My crystal is 18.00M so running jeepers at that. Running a straight through cable.... I don't get it, maybe smokin crack here.... I don't know.

Where did you get the Atmega from?
If mine then make sure the jumper is on the program pins. Almost all problems are the result of using the wrong parallel cable. You need a STRAIGHT through 25 pin SERIAL cable to program the units.

I got the Atmega from you Mili, I don't think its the programmer though. I think its the cable. I used the same cable to try and read my JTAG and it wouldn't work, then went back to my parallel cable 6ft with (ferrite beads filter) on it and it read my JTAG fine. I just need to get a gender changer and will try my programmer.
I will let you know if I am having more problems than that with the programmer but I'm sure its fine.

Got it working.
I used a 6ft parallel cable with (ferrite beads filter) on it worked right away. The cable I was having a problem with was 10ft and didn't have the filter on it. So not sure if it was the filter or the length but it works. Hope this helps some one out.

It weas teh lenght. As a rule of thubs always work with the shortest possible cable length when dealing with unpowered parallel devices

My cable was actually from an old scanner I had. Its a Male/Female then I use a Male/Male gender changer since the programmer is a female.
I got my programmer from Mili, set the jumper to PROG, use Jeepers 2.10 and it enters program mode right away. You end up writing a few times sometimes to get it to take, but it will go.

i'm still having the same problem as yous but i'm just using a gender changer, any help would be greatfull
