I've got a very well-made JT-Tek DP X ISO progammer that I would like to attempt replacing the crystal on before buying a new programmer. It has a 3.58 MHz crystal that I have removed. I think it is an Epson. The markings are...

SG-615PC
3.5795 M
E 0392A

The closest match I can find at digikey is an Epson

Technical/Catalog Information:..SE2806CT-ND
Standard Package:.....................1
Category:..................................Crystal s / Oscillators
Family:......................................Cryst als
Vendor:.....................................Epson Electronics America, Inc.
Frequency:................................3.6864MH z
Package / Case:........................Surface Mount (smd-smt)
Packaging:................................Cut Tape (CT)
Other Names:...........................SE2806CT
.................................................S G-636PCE-3.6864MC

My concern is the description "OSCILLATOR 3.6864MHZ SMD". Are Crystals and Oscillators the same? The number system is the same (i.e SG-6xxPCE), they look similar, and the pinouts effectively are the same size.

My guess is they are, but I am looking for confirmation from someone more experienced with electronics.

Thanks in advance.

Crystals and oscillators are not the same thing. A crystal relies on external hardware to manage it, and an oscillator does it all in the same component. If you removed a crystal, replace it with a crystal. If you removed an oscillator, replace it with an oscillator. Every ISO for Charlie or Bev that I have ever seen has a plain crystal, not an oscillator. Merely replacing the crystal may or may not make your H/HU loader work with Charlie plastic.

I have an ISO I removed the crystal, and matched it online at Digikey, then called them up. They helped me find the right one, cost me 44 cents, but add handling fees and shipping.

I replaced it and it works like it was built for 3.68.

I suggest calling them up, getting the correct replacement, or double checking what you found.

Or you can try Jameco. Their handling fee is dropped if you buy a buck's worth.

Thanks guys -

I called Digikey - the tech I spoke with was very helpful. My programmer uses an oscillator and I was able to match it with one at 3.6864MHz from the same Epson series.

I also ordered the parts for adding digital audio out to a DP301.

This hobby is great fun. I'm getting pretty good at soldering too...

Good thing you like soldering... you'll have fun installing the tsop locks...
