First I want to express thanks to all of the great people here, I have been a longtime reader of the forums and the many how-to’s. and had a great run with the HU. I have stayed silent, mostly because I like to read and figure things out for myself. Each time I have had a question a simple search had brought me the answers and if not a direct answer then enough information to be able to draw my own conclusions. Again thanks to all.

Now on to the title of this post, and this may be useless information or information that some may already be aware of but, I thought that some may find it an interesting read.

This is a story of the dealings that my step-daughter just experienced with Dave and a DTV Tech that may have been just a little to open with information at least in Dave’s eyes I’m sure.
My step-daughter has subbed for the past 2 years and has been my constant source of a valid bin. In exchange she has been able to see many great movies and sporting events with me only needing to stop by now and then when things got full. She called me the day the swap out nags started and ask me what she should do, at that time she had not received a new card yet. I told her to give it a few days if she did not receive a new card to call Dave and tell them. She called me the very next day and said that she got the card in the mail what should she do, (the new card was a P5/D1) I advised her to do nothing for now as no tiers had dropped yet. I called her back a little latter and told her to call Dave anyway and tell them that you had not received a card and you’re getting these messages to insert new access card. She called and told them what was going on and the rep said that he would make sure her card would stay active for 8 more days and they would overnight her another card. 5 days pass and no 2nd card and we are now seeing cannels drop. She now decides to give the p5 sent to her a try and follows the onscreen instructions and instructions sent with the card and it doesn’t work. When she is asked to insert new card it tells her this is an invalid card, (hardware was a 430 and also tried in a no-zkt 420) she calls me and asked me what to do I tell her to call Dave again. This took 3 calls and 4hours invested. She tells them that she received a card in the mail but it is not working the tech tries for nearly 1 hour to get this card to activate she tells me that he was having her push and hold different buttons on the IRD but always the same results. After investing all this time the tech finally discovers the tech #1 killed the card they where trying, and this is how it was put to her. Also they find out the 2nd card that was to be sent out was never sent, notes made on account that one was to be sent but never followed through with. After lots of we’re so sorry for your troubles they are going to overnight her another card and tells her to just toss out the other one. She is then advised to do nothing with the new card when she gets it and to call in for instructions. Card arrives not next day but the day after that and ½ of the HU is gone now. The card sent her this time is a P4. She calls as instructed only to wait on hold for 2 hours. She hangs up and calls back a sales line and tells them what has been going on and lets them know in no uncertain terms that Dish Net was looking very attractive at this time and that this would be their only and last chance to make things right and that she would not be transferred into a Q but transferred directly to someone that was going to make this work now. She was then transferred directly to what they called a special department setup to handle issues with the card swap out. She told me that the gentleman was very nice and helpful. She said that he had her remove her HU and unplug the IRD, after a few minuets he had her plug it back in and had her insert the new P4. He told her to just give it a few moments and it should come up witch it did. During the wait they began to talk and he was being apologetic about all the trouble she had gone through. He said it was something they had to do because of all the pricey that was going on. He asked her if she had ever had one of the older H cards and she said no this is the only card I have every had and he started to tell her how easy the older cards where to hack and that they have had a number of different cards over the years and that the one she had most people called the P3 card or HU card and that now she has a P4 card. He then told her that they where hoping to be able to start swapping out current receivers with a new card less IRD’s sometime in October and told her she wouldn’t have all this trouble with the new receiver. Somewhere in the conversation he was telling her how small these new IRD’s are and that there where no buttons on them and you did everything from the remote. He then said that if they are not ready with the new IRD’s then she would get her P4 swapped out for a P5 because of some issues they have seen with the P4. She didn’t asked what the issues where but asked when will you do that and he said starting in October if you don’t get a new receiver you will get a new card. She thanked him and ended the call. She then called me to give me the details and then ended our conversation with “What was that you where telling me about Dishnet and a Magic Card?”

Please take this for what it’s worth, this could all start again with a swap out of the P4 in October and a move towards getting everyone using a card less IRD or this was some gibberish of an underpaid and over worked tech that was passing the time to the next paycheck.

When I first started this hobby it was with Cable Boxes which had no card. That's why there are Radio Shacks for $6.00 soldering irons. I might be wrong, have been once or twice in my life, but I don't find a cardless receiver any threat at all, or atleast no more of a challenge than the latest p4/p5. In fact, I kinda welcome something new since it seems the p4/p5 has all stumped and it doesn't appear that a fix will be available anytime soon, if at all. Perhaps the cardless receiver will be easier to crack....certainly JTAG sales will increase, as well as irons and solder suckers. As far as moving to Dish, I am indifferent. I do believe that the technology used by DTV will soon be used by Dish....it just makes good business sense. Dish is well aware that their competitor has stopped the living room hacker dead in their tracks......they are going to follow DTV's lead. Anyway, that's my two cents....which today is worth absolutely nothing.

Good luck to all and I hope none give up on the challange. We should all encourage invention, even if it is well out of our range of knowledge, encourage those around you...it benefits us all.

I can remember paying 50$ for a little black box that opened all cable channels. Then my cable company went digital. No one makes a discrambler for digital. I got into h-cards they lasted a long time before black sunday and all the hashings then HU's then hash-hash-hash. It just seems to me that hackers are falling behind all the new technical advances and all of the best hackers got busted. I just hope this isn't a dying hobbie like the cable boxes. cause it's been fun screwing Dave!!

BEV is talking about it too , here in Canada we already have a cardless satellite service , Starchoice and they run a cardless receiver and it has not been hacked ...

"Dish is well aware that their competitor has stopped the living room hacker dead in their tracks......they are going to follow DTV's lead."

I am curious to know how subscription numbers are trending for Charlie vs. Dave.

My guess is that Charlie presently is seeing a flood of new subscriptions while Dave is bleeding customers. I have never believed the "billions-of-dollars-in-lost-revenue" argument against hacking. There may be some lost revenue; however, most hacking IMO are for services that would never have been purchased anyway. Moreover, many hackers sub just to have fun with testing, therefore, generating revenue that would not have existed had the systems been "unhackable".

Dave also will realize eventually that he made a big mistake extorting money from mom and pop testers. This is going to cost him big.

Time will tell, but I think Charlie and Dave both will realize that the game must continue. The trick is keeping the level of difficulty and cost high enough to limit the number of testers to only those hardy souls with the skills and/or resources.

It may be too late for Dave, though, because he's been such a Dick...
