Yes you're right there's not a lot of info out there. I'm running a Atmega128 which seems to be a very easy way to go if you just want your TV.
There are some guys on here that can probably help you out that know there shit on dish/bev, not me though if there was a beginner I'm an infant. I do grow up fast though.
First thing if you haven't done anything is get a JTAG and a TSOP lock. Get your TSOP and eeprom backed up and your lock on.
