View Full Version : 301.13 making funny noises

I did a couple of 301.013 single tsop vid mod's this afternoon. All went well except for the last one (go figure!) I used the 9V battery which works great, for me anyway. The last one I hooked up jtag, plugged in battery to my clip and then plugged in ird. It started making some nasty sounds from the power (ac) input side of the ird. I continued on quickly and read and programmed the 7fffffac area of the tsop. Then double checked it to make sure it wrote. All went well except for this noise. After desoldering and hooking the ird back up, won't power on now and still making the nifty i.c. burn out hissing noise (anyone playing with stuff that has made an oopsy knows the noise you don't like to hear) :( Any ideas what may have happened? Checked all connections and made sure there was no solder drips or shorts. Any help would greatly appreciated.

You appearantly have shorted something in the power supply section. Did you cut the trace correctly before applying 9 volts to the 3.3v circuit????

skinerd,
As far as I know. I checked continuity to make sure the trace was cut. The noise sounds like it is coming the coil or regulator. Has OREGA on the top of it

Only thing I see with that OREGA is the processor and it has OMEGA on it, what is the component designation, (ie L5xxx or C4xxx orsomething to that effect).)

Feel the top of the processor when you plug it up, if its getting hot real fast, you now have a boat anchor. Noise your hearing is more than likely coming from the coil in the switching power supply because it's under a short circuit load.

The sound is coming from the area in the picture I attached. If I am correct I think this is part of the switching ps. The processor is getting warm to the touch but it doesn't get to the point where you can't touch it. I left it plugged in for a few minutes and I would say its almost normal temp. I would really like to get this back up and going if possible. I have spent hours with a magnifying glass trying to locate a short or something and can't find 1. Thanks for your help guys and hopefully you can help me out. Its much appreciated. The location on the board is T5001. The location your referring to is L5005 but it doesnt sound like that coil but its hard to tell. Is there any way to check either of these out? I have a digital multimeter etc to test with.

The part you have circled is the power transformer. It's going to be fine unless it's smoking, but it's going to buzz or hum if it's under to heavy a load. Something is shorted internal either the tsop or the cpu. I had a 301.13 do the same thing after vidmod for some reason. I use it for a door stop.

Probably have a bad chip somewhere pulling down the power supply, a bad TSOP or processor mentioned above, is the most likely...forget changing the CPU, changing the TSOP can be a challenge but can be done, but you will need to isolate to find out for sure what is bad in order to proceed.

Fair enough guys. Thanks for all the help. I wll probably do the same with it then. I am not going to get into changing things at this point. I don't mind changing a cap or resistor or something like that, but those chips, not a chance. Thanks anyway.
