A bit of guidance for buying receiver and/or dvr
I'm interested in tinkering a little with Bev now that Dave is down,
anyhow, I would like to know what type of equimpment I should
get. For example can I use a bell DVR if I'm hacking the
receiver? Also what receiver is best to use? Or which ones
should I stay away from?

My prefernce for beginners is a 2700, 3800 receiver. These receivers are practically the same and easy to jtag, if ever you get ecm. Getting a DVR is expensive and if you toast your receiver and it will cost you a lot.
One setback with the 2700 and 3800 is thier firmware. Their menu guides that shows up on your tv screen is a bit slow and not very clear. I stay away from 301.013 because of the vid mod and the older receiver which is not jtagable.

Is their a receiver that I can buy new that has the jtag port? I live in Canada, so it would have to be an xpressvu model.
thanks,

I believe you can still get 5100 model with a jtag port but it is expensive. This is the receiver with harddrive built in. The 3100 0.10 you can buy new but no jtag port.

Is their still a way to collect eeprom/rom reads from a receiver without a jtag port and/or how much more complicated would it be? Also, what is "0.00"? I'm familiar that their are 3100 models, but I don't understand what the #'s mean afterwards.

It's easy to cut a hole in the bottom of receiver to be able to jtag the 301.010.

Is it not possible to remove the clips, screws, and plugs instead of cutting?
And what is the "010"
thanks for help so far,
