I have a freind who has a switch on his coiaxial cable that he shut's off at night along with the power to the reciever. He say's that he has not got hit by an ecm in over four months because of this. Will this work or is he just been lucky? He has a 4000 ird with the plastic programmed. Thanks :) :)

I think that the receiver needs to be off to get hit, so that method should work.
On the same note, I never turn mine off, just turn off TV and leave receiver on all the time.

A cable switch is OK however, I have build several of two different circuit designs that will turn off the input to the IRD when you turn to power off to the IRD. Simple to build, and as you know if there is no input from the dish to the IRD, there is no ECM. However when you turn IRD power back on, you are fair game. This is not a switch for the line cord to the IRD, but instead a circuit that will disconnect the cable when you turn the IRD off with the remote or power button on the IRD. As for the cable switch you are talking about, if you turn that off there is no reason to turn off the IRD, except to save power.
