New virgin software plays with you to make you think the vid mod did not work. Stick the yellow card in for the updates and then after anything will work

Veegetz, I've recently purchased a refurbished 508 with 2 GT chips and no R331, just empty pads where the R331 should be located. I am planning on doing the Vid mod. My understanding is that for the no R331 Vid mod one cuts the trace between A + B, then installs a toggle switch that connects A+B for normal operation and connects A to 12V for programming Flash2. Is that what you did?

I am a little puzzled by how you got it to work, after programming the Flash. Did you leave A + 12V tied together, instead of connecting A+B for normal operation? I thought once the Flash2 is programmed you want to connect A + B as they were prior to updating Flash2?

When you updated thru the stream did you use a yellow card or a blue card? I believe for a blue card you need to go to an earlier version of firmware P063 or P067. My receiver's firmware is P079 which indicates it orginally had a yellow card. I bought it without the card. I am planning on programming the firmware to P063 before stream updating it with either my Atmega or Rom2 plastic. For those of you that have done this, am I taking the right approach?

New info:
I did the OJ1 mod and put in a header. I did the vidmod and am ready to re-write tsop(s?). I put the PVR in the stream with the yellow card and it took the updates. I will save those 3 images. But, I'm unsure as to what I have to mod in flashedit. I did find the 63 version in the D/L area, I edited fl2 to match my IRD# and Box key. I "virginized" the eprom image that was with 63.
Questions: Did I miss anything? Do I now write the 63 fl2 and eprom back to my 508?

the rest of this is now old news.
Could someone point me twoard the light?

Thanks
I bought a 508 yesterday, new gt/gt chipset DC3D build (sound familiar?) cut the jtag hole, dug deep and got the right files for the box keys. Am a bit unsure as to the vidmod instructions, some posts say it's OK and some say no. Never been in the stream, came with yellow card. Any guidance appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Understand that I need to do vidmod to get around write protect on GT/GT chipset. Have seen an assortment of instructions, (lifting leads on one, yours with cut traces) Am OK with methods, relativly proficient at the mechanics of it, just a tad paranoid, and want to get it right the first time. The method outlined with pictures and the SPDT switch, looks like you use the same 508 that I now have. What must I do to confirm that? The picture of the traces under the maim board is where exactly? under what chips/area. Do I also need the OJ1 mod? How does that get determined? Lastly, once I get the vidmod done, and/or the OJ1 mod what mods do I make to the version 63 flash image ( I couldn't find a 67 in the D/L area). I will be moving a MC into the 508 (hopefully).
Thanks again.

Iammatt - What do you mean when you say 63 version. Is that the firmware. If that's firmware u are talking about then you need to let the IRD update with the card it came with to the latest rev. Then you need to look at the address 7FFFFFAC it is usually D500. If it is turn the vidmod on and change the values at address 7FFFFFAC to 0000.

This is the bit that is confusing me. Yes version 63 of the firmware was in one of the posts as a necessary step. PVR has been in the stream and now has latest version. Do I take the ver 63 and put in my box key and IRD # and reflash?
Also: I have seen posts that warn about doing vidmod on a 508 that has a spot for R331 but no installed resistor, that's what I have. Could you confirm that the "easy" vidmod is for this beast.
Thanks so much.

look on my sig for the 508-510. The picture has no resistor. Since you have the current firmware. Just do the vidmod and correct the problem at address 7FFFFFAC. I don't know if you have to erase any sectors. If that doesn't work then just flash to the older version and see if that does it.

I have a 508 with dual DT chips and a JTag port on the bottom of the receiver. I was under the assumption that I wouldn't have to do the Vid Mod due to the fact that I have the DT chips on U6 and U7. I used the JTag to back up the U6 and U7, programmed my magic card, and I was up and running pretty quick. However, I went down about an hour later, with a message stating that "my receiver is having some extreme problems and I need to call 1800...." I ended up having to reflash my receiver, I inserted the yellow card, and let the receiver do all of the downloads. I get to the congrats you are using a dish 500... screen, but I can't get off the screen without hitting the guide button.

Once I hit the guide button, a message pops up that says my guide is outdated and a new one has to be downladed, I accept, and my receiver starts to download, but it takes forever, finally I let it run for three hours, and both green and red buttons started to flash on the front of my receiver, and it went back to the congrats screen. And it becomes a never ending cycle...any advice would be much appreciated...btw I am a frikin noob if you can't tell :)

Sounds like your EEPROM is corrupt. Try reflashing it with a VIRGIN image. You can create the image with JKEYS.

You may want to consider installing a digital lock to protect your receiver in the future. The one made by oddcircuits works well with the 508.

Be a lot easier with Flashedit, or IRDR........then load it with jkeys......

Try the crash course for jkeys and flashedit its in the echostar files section#125 for now or click on the link http://www.dssftp.com/filedownload/downloads.php?file=NmIyODNiOGM5Ye8tiG9dzBOIGBLBxSg 5SqP10Bkhs6C8qTxSRuwZakisDYugjk1O3QFuTtXo4aqGfA==

Chitty - If you have a backup of the eeprom and tsop then you don't need the virgin image. Try to just flash the tsop. If you havn't erased any images of the chips yet then don't try erase anything yet, because It seems like your were ecm'd and probably just need to erase a Sector. I think the sector to erase is SA60 on flash 2. Search around Im not sure right now. If you don't find anything then you might want to erase the full tsop and restore the backup images u have.

ok, I erased the SA60 sector, and I am still having the same issues. How do I go about erasing my full TSOP?
