Is it possible to test in China, particularly Shanghai? If it is what satellite and what equipment would be used?
Thanks

I would seriously forget about that in China.

Remember that those people aren't even keen on wide open internet access.

True enough, but in the hotels you can get cnn etc. and it is Satellite TV, my friend lives there and was wondering if there was a way to tap in.

I'm guessing that the dish would never be able to pick up a signal from Shaghai due to the curvature of the earth. The satellite would be over N.America so there's no way a dish in Shanghai would pick it up.

Hotels, etc, probably have deals with local sat. companies to provide CNN coverage. Hotels have to cater for the international traveller. It wouldn't be much fun for an English speaking person to have to watch Chinese only TV in a hotel.

No, I didnt think they could receive the signal from say 110 ,119, 61 etc. I was wondering if they could pirate a signal from a Sat. over China. You are right, english channels are a blessing for the traveller.

No, cause satellite signal is below the horizon.

it's possible to " test " from a sat over china , BUT you'd need to know what type of receiver they are using , then find out what hacks are available for that reciever , then your going to have to figure out how to apply the hack to work on the sat you want to pick up . ( ie dishnet and bell , the method of hacking is simalar , but must be tailored to the sat provider ) .

another possiblity would be hitting a sat from another country nearby and picking up that feed .

hacking into things is a world wide phenomen , so i'm sure someone from china has already done it . the trouble is getting your foot in the door and figuring out the details .

the only real draw back i can see is the chinese gov taking a disliking to "testing " , then who knows what would happen , you might never be seen again .

just ask Microsoft about all the bootlegging piracy being produced from China and sold freely...big problem over their...the Chinese also counterfit a whole slew of other items in the clothing and jewelry industries from Rolexes to Calvin Kleins...go to any large fleamarket like industry investigators do and you can find items that were made and sold from China that are illegal because they didnt pay licensing fees and others monies associated with rightful ownership

but Burnt Servo is essentially correct...youll have to see what sats are pointed to Shanghi and see what is offered up over there to receive their programming......if i were there,id go find a local satellite shop that sells equipment and ask a few questions..of course,i dont speak Chinese so an interpreter would have to intervene

as far as CNN is concened...i dont think they get their feed out of Atlanta or New York.....I would think their European divisions might bounce a signal over there...who knows???

Are you kidding me? I would never do it especially if I was a guest in their Country. Breaking the law in a foreign country isn't too smart. A friend who lives there asked me if it was possible and like you have mentioned he would have to know the kind of reciever etc. I'll pass on the info to him. I was hoping a tester in China might give me some info so I could pass it on to him. I'm sure there are testers in China but are probably reluctant to expose themselves online.

Yes you are corrct slu3 re: the satellites over North America, but I'm guessing that there are also satellites in orbit over China.

I see people are very mis-informed about China....read my lips...no new taxes...opps! wrong forum...of course you can "test" birds in China. Are you kidding me? China is exploding in internet usage, as well as cell phones. Same shit for sat TV...and microsoft bootleg windows...

There are access cards and systems sold on various gray/black/red markets...just ask the locals in HK, Macau, or even in mainland cities like Canton or Shenzhen.

Granted those channels will not be Charlies or Dave's, but you will see TV from Japan, Korea, Mid-East, and UEFA soccer!!! If you are looking for pron channels, then it is cheaper to just buy bunch of them on VCD market! Don't tell me you worry about CNN if you live in China...there are other issues that people care more instead of biased world news!!! Get with the program, dude!!!

They are using N1 shit there, I got two people from Hong Kong order unlockers before and they said they got ROM 3 and 10 over there. That is all I know about China. I would seriously doubt you can see the Chinese satellites from here though unles you got a nice long and strong drillbit and the enthusiasm to drill through Earth.

People as close as the Virgin Islands have to use 10 foot dishes to get dish network.
The (good ---dish / Bev) sat signals are not actually line of sight they are AIMED (like a big spot beam) at Canada or the U.S. to keep others, like the offshore islands, from getting them.

By law, the Chinese who live in the vicinity of Hong Kong and Macau are not allowed to use antena to pick up air signals from HK and Macau. If they want to watch those channels, they must subscribe the cable. The cable signal is delayed by a minute or so. Even a channel in HK that is operated by Chinese Government friendly businessmen is subject to such scrutiny. It is a serious offence if the government catches them watching HK TV using antena.

I doubt that if the Chinese government would allow citizens picking up satellite signal from uncontrolled stations.

are you still in the stone age or what? talking about China 20 years ago? people wanted to watch tv from HK and macau...nowadays, it is the OTHER WAY around, except the government news!!!

china tv programs usually has much better quality in artistic values for their soaps and music. I lived in Canton and Shenzhen region near HK border. You can see multiple of tv channels on display everywhere, in shopping centers. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG for ANYONE to watch anything from CNN, HK TV, or whatever shit...as long as politic and prono less!!! A few months back, there was a Falungong TV program stealing SAT signals from one of the birds, and resulted many chinese houses seeing an "anti-government"/pro-falungong messages for over 5 minutes span.

But in reality, who give a damn about "pron" channels when you can see LIVE shows for cheaper than $10 in KTV or night club!???

Get real guys, the most booming biz in that area is all related to KTV, night clubs, food biz and other adult entertainment, NOT SAT TV!!!

BTW, if you have a chance to visit Canton, or Shenzhen, drive around those multi-million dollars houses, or gated communities, you will see some super rich locals with plenty 18 inches dishes pointing to birds from Thailand, Taiwan, Korea and Japs. A little island near the east side of pearl river thru the city, used to be Canton's sports center, is now a multi-million dollar (US $$$) gated community for the newly riches. They give you a SAT system for free if you can afford to buy a single family complex!!!

Personaly I would got to one of the hotels that have the sat and talk to the baggage boys or the person that handles the tv system. They probably dont make much money and if its an international hotel they probably speak english, and would let you walk around and answer any question you have for about $20 US. Hell, for another $20 he might be able to find you a 'spare' receiver that the hotel will never miss. The rest would be up to you and a few Google searches. I your going to be there for a while it would definetly be worth a little time to find out.

I have a friend in Iwakuni Japan and he tells me that the best connection that he can get there is 56k dialup and he knows what he's talking about, he is the one that got me into testing in the first place. Its just hard for me to believe that in Japan, of all countries, he can only get 56k. And he said that was $800/yr.
