View Full Version : What buffered JTAG to buy for 301-010 ?

Sorry if asked/answered elsewhere, couldn't find any related thread, sticky or recommendations:

My 301-010 got ECMd using MC in married sub mode with ROM10 card (unprotected IRD, trusted the MC offer, it ran one mere week...).

Now looking for buffered JTAG programmer to repair, found various designs and offers all over the place. Prices vary from $30-$100 - what to buy???

One on Ebay was particularly interesting as it combines JTAG and LOCK functions - yet no one ever bought one (check " JTAG-Buffered Read/Write & Lock NEW" )?
Bad choice? Anyone using a design like this successfully? Does it work? Trustworthy dealer??

My 301-010 has no JTAG cutout in the bottom, so I have to solder wires on top pads; can't use PogoPin designs then?

Some buffered JTAGs work w/o battery, necessary, good or bad? Short cables eliminate need for battery powered devices?

So many questions, so few channels at this time (101...)
Any helpful advice highly appreciated - thnx!

Buy a j31 Jtag

Yea, either solder one to the top or buy a J31, I don't think they are buffered but they work.

Thanks for the hint. will look it up
Just was shown a XILINK Parallel Cable IV device here at work for professional JTAGGING.
It needs external power (3.3V) which I can supply. The 301-010 is using 3.3V for JTAG, or?

Could it be used in conjunction with the standard JKeys software, are all JTAGs using same pin layout on LPT connector?
This device could be used immediately to erase the Flash1 section for a new downstream and to read out the IDs as needed later.

Am I on the right track? Let me know - thanks!

dude, build a phone jack, "simple jtag" and never solder or open your box again. By far the cheapest way also approx ten dollars, less if you have an old printer cable, and an old six wire phone cord laying around, then it's only a dollar for a five pack of resistors!, I tagged and reflashed my ird in less time than it takes for the update after a sector erase, about ten mins. and watching tv again...

Just to 'close the loop' for other 'new' readers that may have gotten confused like I did:

'phone jack simple jtag' appears to describe a method where the JTAG signal lines are ported out of the receiver through the modem connector. Good for the 301-010 models without the JTAG porthole underneath. Obviously the modem connector is never to be plugged into a real 60V AC phone line after that!

And the mentioned J31 JTAG device seems to be specifically targeted for this breed of receiver with pogo pins layed out for TOP access to the JTAG port. Cool!

Thanks for the ideas!

You have the info to make one of those?

May I help (as a newbie)? Found and saved this sniplet from groups.google.com, it explains the procedure for this phone plug modification as:

"...Obviously, this depends on how you wired the e-jtag to the RJ12 (phone jack
input.). What I did was this: Wired my ird first. Then I connected a 6 band
male phone jack to 6-wire phone wire. (I bought a 2nd hand set of phone
stripper/crimper for $5). Strip the other end of the phone wire that u will
connect to the db25 eventually. Leave the ends bare so u can test them with
a meter. Now, while the ird is still open, you can test which wire of the
phone jack that corresponds to its pad on the jtag...and since we know what
wires of the DB25 go to the jtag, you can figure out which pin each wire of
the phone cable should go to on the DB25. Just write the colors down on
paper, and write down which pin it goes to. Dont forget to ground 18-25 on
the DB25. I also used a DB25 cover, and then when it was done, I put hot
glue where the wire comes out of the case, so no strain is on any wires
themselves, since strand wire breaks easily. I also put the resistors
directly into the ejtag holes, instead of putting them in the wire...this is
a personal preference, since if u will only want one cable to do several
machines, u would put the resistors in the cable. I only do my one IRD with
it so...good luck. .."

that's pretty much dead on how it should be done, the details to get from that point to the simple jtag are also quite simple and available every where. PM me if you'd like.
