View Full Version : 1974 yamaha Enduro 250
picked it up REAL cheap, was/is not firing, this guy had "filed" down the points. had to order new set,old timer told me you should never file on that kind. waiting on them to get here.
anybody got one or know anything about how to get it to fire,
got four wires coming out of points. black should be fire, yellow for headlight and two greens for tail/brake light.
2 cycle engine not bad shape at all for its age,
what do I need to do after I get the new points, where is a link to a forum ar website for old ass biles?

I'll give you my thoughts on old 2 cycle engines. If its been very long since it last ran,you should drain the gas tank and carburetor and install a new fuel filter. Make sure there are no restrictions of air flow except the air filter. As to the points, install in the reverse order you removed them.Try positioning them about the middle of the adjustment range as a place to start.Theres a lot more to geting the timing correct but for now this would be close enought to get it running. I'm not familier with Yamahas, but this bike seems like it needs a battery to run. Make sure its fully charged and terminals are clean and tight. Hope this helps
thnaks I will do the gas and filter thing along with the points.
no it does not have a battery
I need a diagram on the oints set uo on this bitch, it is different than the one I had back in the day. does the oints break the ground to allow fire,
thats the way I see it but dont make sense. has two copper wound coils under cover and I see the big one goes to the headlights and tail lights . the other should be for firing. cant get a reading past the "coil" or whatever the call it now, the thing between the points that the spark plug hooks to.
I cant find any good pages on 2 cysle moto engines or electrical?
Anybody throw me a bone I will look it up.
msn and google dont show me shit.

Dang...I cut my teeth on old Yammies! The coil you refer to inside the Magneto is the charge coil. The charge coil powers the ignition coil, and the points interupt the ground path when they open to cause the field collapse on the ignition coil.
thats what I had figured, this guy told me I was crazy that points would not be grounded, I thought the points broke the ground allowing it to fire, got new set gonna put them in thes weekend, my ole lady wants to scoot around!!!
Noof
how can I check the ignition coil to see if it is bad,
The one the spark plug hooks up to the end. Is that what it is or if not WTF is it called and how can I check it.
the readings I am getting are wierd to me
thanks
running like a top!!!!!
had to desolder all coils and put new point and the condesor was the main problem, soon as I cleaned all old solder off made new wires and resoldered it fired first kick.
put fplug in and set point, (retated a little) and is running good.
I was checking for dc from magneto till I found out it is ac..
had to make new plug wire too.
