If you ever go to a drag race, a big national meet, you'll stop going around in circles and straighten up for good..:D
Here's another shot of Doug Herbert's starting line explosion. What caused this is an intake valve that hung open. This explosion normally occurs inside the cylinders...this is 7000 horsepower at work...but in this case, because of the open valve it all went out the wrong way, back up through the intake tract...it blew the supercharger off, and you get to witness the explosive power of nitromethane firsthand.
Not one person was injured. This is a lot more fun than NASCAR..:p

They run dual pumps, huge affairs with a capacity far in excess of what the engine demands. The fuel and clutch management systems are unbelievably sophisticated, far more than the engine itself...fuel is injected in a variety of places - at the top of the supercharger, right beneath the air intake...there are nozzles mounted into the intake manifold, right beneath the supercharger...and they are direct injected as well - right into the combustion chambers, like a large diesel engine.
Nitromethane carries its own oxygen - the engine injests relatively little outside air...and that's the reason for the incredible volume of fuel. Getting more power out of the engine is mostly a matter of how much fuel you can run through it - and not have it detonate in a million pieces. It's a slow burning fuel, and with the quantity that's injected into the cylinder, it takes two 44 AMP magnetos just to light it off. It burns at over 7,000 degrees F. - and with it's slow burning characteristics, you'll see 8-10 foot header flames at night, and the noise is absolutely astounding. You're hearing and seeing the detonation outside the cylinder, as opposed to normal combustion (with gasoline or alcohol) that takes place inside the cylinder.
Nitro is about 40 bucks a gallon. Ready to pay the fuel bill for one of these? If they win the race on Sunday, they will have used five thousand dollars worth of fuel, just for one weekend!
Here's a picture of Former Top Fuel champion Kenny Bernstein, at night...

Here's another pic, 4X....this is a genuine 1940 Ford fire truck, powered by two Rolls-Royce 601 Viper turbine engines. Combined with afterburners, they produce in excess of 12,000 horsepower. The truck is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the "world's fastest truck"...with a measured top speed in excess of 407 MPH.
It will probably be the first unit at the scene of a fire. http://www.jetfiretruck.com/test01.jpg
Now that is a Fire Truck !!

...for you motorcycle junkies out there. This bike belongs to and is ridden my Larry "Spiderman" McBride. It runs a supercharged, nitromethane-fueled 4-cylinder motorcycle engine that produces in excess of 1,100 horsepower. Best quarter-mile times are 5.93 seconds at 243 MPH. Oh, baby...

Man, they look pretty foxy to me...I also noticed the huge crowd in the grandstands that came to cheer them on
Lookit those drag racers. I've met every one of the drivers...I've raced (online) the first one, longtime nitro racer Ron Capps. They all walked away from those explosions. Now, those boys have got COJONES, Cojones.....:D
