I found "Pop-Up Stopper" to work not too bad, and it's free as well with no limited trial time.
This is the download page, and the free edition is about 3/4 down the page.

I've had pretty good luck just upgrading to XP's service pack 2. Takes care of most pop-ups and e-mail content loading from the internet, which can log your computer's address as it sends. I really hate all the overhead of blockers and other protection programs.

I Like and still use to this Day , in my mind the best damn Pop-up-killer there is , Its been around since 1994 & and I myself have been using it since around 1999 , its called
Popup killer ( I'm sure that helps theres only a millon named that anyways ) its the one that has a little YELLOW LIGHTNING BOLT in the bottom corner of your taskbar , and desktop. But here in lies the problem as I find out awhile back when my comptuer crashed & I went to the company that makes it http://software.xfx.net/ to download a copy but to my dissmay they had stopped supporting & there was even anymore downloads available , It says why on there website , but I never had any problems , so Off I went searching the internet for a copy and It wasn't easy when every other pop up killer is named pop up killer to find this one , but finally after about a week of different searches I found it and have been using it ever since again ( about 9 months ) it really easy to use , a pretty much set and forget pop up killer , that does its job w/o out using any sys resources , I like the simple smart detection that u can increase and the biggy I like is being able to control how many pages can open at one time , and being able to control the size of web pages to kill ( we all know alot of thos pop up ads ar the smaLL ones that try to kreep by ) any ways here is a copy of the one I have been using , if any body uses it let me know it it works , don't forget when you first set it up to got to options in it and put how many windos you want open at the same time ( the max ) and that will definetly help , It works great w/o even changing anything but I find using the # of windows to be open at the same time option and the smart detection slider to be even more efective. Also for the ones that di slip by ( not many ) all you have to do is add the address to the black out list so that next time you visti the site where that one was poping up it will be killed,

Since ive dl'd "12 ghosts" i have not had one popup. it is a free dl, just google. each ghost represents a different task, one of them is a blocker. make sure when you open the file, the "disable popups" box is checked. easy.
