I need to purchase a Jtag, what is the best Jtag to buy? What is the difference between quad mode jtag and a buffer jtag? and What are jKeys? And how often would you use a Jtag if you already have you box keys?

Assuming you have a IRD that can be Jtaged, you will need it often, depending on when Charlie send down those nasty ECM's. Buy one from Mili's or make one, but you will need one for sure if you "test" very long. Save the information from the tsop and eeprom chips, on a floppy or flash drive or better yet, both.

i would go with buffered jtag, have had one for years and fixed anything i have come across with it
how often you will jtag, depends on personal preferance of programs run, private programs to this date have outlasted freeware, from anything ive seen, since im no coder then to pay a few bucks for cheap entertainment then so be it.
to this date the 6000 ird has outlasted anything that charlie has thrown at the stream , got to love it,
stable as cable
good luck in your new hobby
