I've seen on several occasions people being advised not to get a 2700 reciever. Why is this? I've also heard that it's the best to start with... I'm confused. This is what I was planning to get.

Also, I just bought a rom 2 card (I don't care how many channels I get, most likely won't do any PPV...) and now I need a reciever. Is it necessary to get one that's completely new ... or will it be already married to a card so I can't use it with the rom2?

Thanks for your help.

I have two 3900 and one 3700 that work great. The rom2 will work with any of these receivers. DO NOT buy anything that is like 3000,4000 there are several more not sure what they are I had a list, Just remember DON'T buy if it dose not have a Jtag on it. I am not sure if the 2700 has a Jtag. The receiver that has no Jtag gets hit you can't fix it unless you want to spend about another $100 bucks. Hope I was of some help

2700 are easy but the drawback is limited hard drive so you will not be able to receive all channels and will have to make a custom tier list .

They don't have a hard drive!!! Also the hard drive has nothing to do with the number of channels.

I think he means they have a limited memory, which means that they don't like when too many channels are loaded on the receiver.

The only other reason I wouln't get one is that it doesn't have a pic-in-pic guide. That is a huge drawback for a channel-flipper like me.

The upside is that they can take a beating. Easy to jtag, no vidmods, or anything else weird with them.

I recommend getting a 301.010 for a newbie.

For newbies the simple easy to reflash bulletproof 27/28/3700's are easy. Once you learn ecm repairs and reflashing tsop, eeproms etc then time to move on. Yes, 301's are much nicer, But very easy to screw them up as well until

Thanks for your help, guys. It's much clearer now. I am still wondering about buying it used or new. How necessary is it to find a new one?

Since it is an older receiver, you probably would never find a new one. 2700, 2800, 3700 all the same except for the model number. Any you find that works should do it.

The 2700 does not have a 'limited memory'. It will get all the channels providing the tiers are on the card. Same as any other IRD model. A misconception that many ppl have about the 2700/2800/3800

i think you only have problems with the memory when you use the mc.
it will cause your guide not to work properly unless you edit out some of the channels. the 2700 is best though if you plan on testing bev. the 3900 is nicer but not recognized by bev updates. the 3900 can be used by bev but it's a little complicated for a beginner.
