Picked up a used 501 today.....got the seller down to $50, no card, nor remote.

Been reading about this box during this evening. I found a wealth of info from the great bunch of guys here.

What I plan to do is use it in place of my current 301.013 and use the MC I have in there now. The 501 is labeled DishPro.....do I have to use that LNB config or can I just do a switch test before I connect to the sat dish and use the older dual Legacy LNB's and an SW21 I have connected right now?

Has Gunther completed his much awaited 501/508/510 Guide yet?

Thanks,

Dish Pro means that it will work with the DP dishes, they are also backwards compatible with legacy dishes, so yes.....your setup will work.

Can someone tell more about the sw21 problem? what does it mean that it hates the sw21 switch. Im was thinkin on putting an additional LNB to catch the 110 bird and use a sw21 and use it with a 501pvr

I have not heard that before........lots of people use the 501/508/510 with sw21's.

I had conexant chip problems with my 501. Tuner chip got hot and de-soldered the ground pad under it causing pixilation, loss of picture, and frequent searching for sat. In reading why conexants fail (at ID and KC and others) some came to the conclusion that sw21 switches "may" help to over heat the 24108 conexant. They did mention to use DP lnb's. I fixed my conexant by drilling a small hole under it and filling it in with solder. Then did a fan mod (runs 24/7), then added a small heatsink to the chip. AND changed to DP lnb. Workin' good.

read about many conexant chip failures and aquiring sat problems.
hot enought to desolder, that sucks
pvr type receivers do seem to have heat related problems n general, doubt it is the sw21 tho
i have a panasonic ss2000 standalone dvr and it had major heat issues, caused skipping, lockups other problems, pain in a** till i made sure to ventilate it and really good air circulation around it.

Time to jump in!

I just picked up a 501 at a flea market for $70 with card that belongs to it (checked info screen and numbers) but no remote.

I saw on Ebay a couple going in the $50 to $75 range which seemed high. Might have been a guy selling refurb remotes in the $10 range, but can't remember completely.

Radio Shack has them listed at $40, but my zip code search shows all the stores in my area are OUT OF STOCK.

So these questions:

1) Would any of the cheap UNIVERSAL remotes at stores like Target, etc ever have one that worked with the PVR functions of the Platinum DISH remote?

2) Any PM messages for locations of "reasonably" priced DISH remotes?

And on a sidebar subject...my danged JTAG (buffered from Mili) just falls apart right at the "pogo" end. Wires are so tiny it doesn't take much to destroy them. Now I've lost one of the pogos! I'm screwed.

Is simplest solution to wire into the ird phone plug (doesn't look TOO difficult) or some similar "other plug" solution.

Have to get the jtag going so I can backup the nice clean flashes on this beauty of a unit.

Thanks for any help.

P.S. Been doing a 2800 for six months, but couldn't pass up the deal. I use MC in Camless ROM 10.
