Hello, I am posting with question to clarify a repair problem of a friends 508.
I received the 508 after someone had unsuccessfully tried to obtain the box keys and perform a vid mod. When I received it turning it on produced a solid red and green light with the red light staying on until the unit was powered off.
I consider myself an medium to advanced user having jtagged several units and installed several locks easily. Jkeys would provide the 501 unit info (I'd switch to 508) but the rest of the info remained blank. I repaired the cut traces and jumpers for the previous vid mod attempt and tried the Oj1 etc but was not able to identify the box keys or unit id.
Having tried many suggestions from this board and others I thought it was damaged beyond my knowledge and shippped it off to the local sat repair guy.
A $150 and a month later I got the machine back being told it was "REPAIRED" but needed the original card for the ird info to reprogram the firmware to match the hd. When turned on the unit produced the exact red and green light and again I had ZERO luck jtagging beyond jkeys reporting the 501 info, but the rest blank.
He said several hours of repairs were done "sector erasing, sector by sector". I know how to reflash firmware and erase sectors for ecm repair ect but this didn't sound right.
Anyways, now the original owner says he has lost the original card so the repair guy says he can't go any further. I have suggested several times to flashedit proper firmware and go from there but he says it can't be done. Unfortuneatly I get a dcu error when trying myself so.... I have also zeroed the drive etc...
Anyways, if you have read this far I appreciate it! The question I am asking is:
1) Does that sector erasing sound right?
2) Can't just proper virgin software be flashedited and fixed?
I apoligize for this long winded question but I'm really stuck...
