Want to say to the poeple here
that, you can buy a free air sat reciever then (upgrade it) , use your existing dish (s), and get all the channels from charlie.
no programming cards, no key entries, nothing.. point, scan , your done.
for less than 300 bucks for the reciever... kiss the p4 goodbye..

Upgrade it? You mean upgrade the FTA receiver? (if so how do you do that?).
So if i get a charlie install, remove the charlie receivers and put a FTA in it's place, no scripting etc needed???

Before you get all excited, do some reading at the fta sites that arent affliated with the dss sites.
you dont need to sub charlie, all you need is the receiver and some software/hardware.(jtag) You also have a learning curve with locating channels/ setup. Its not easy if you are a newbie. You just dont program a card.
The fta receivers (blackbird,Pansat 2500a etc) are very similiar to the old sats with the 12ft dishes. You can get many channels for free with them, though they are mostly european channels.
With charlie(and FTA) ,you need some code /software to setup everything and the Fta's are slow to respond. What I mean is they arent fast channel changing like DSS and with charlie, you dont get the full channel guide, so youll have to put up with that too. So you give up convenience with DSS for slower FTA and an inaccurate channel guide. They are fun to play with, so If you get one then get the Pansat2500a because its only about 120-140 bucks.

Thanks for the info, i apreciate it. Is there somewhere i can find a users guid for dummies, when it comes to all that? I mean if i get the equipment, can i get instructions from start to finish?

Back at ya dude.... Some of us come to the P4/P5 forum to read about P4/P5 stuff, and don't visit the charlie or BS forums because we don't want to read it.

YES Muppet
The reciever is the Blackbird extreme or Blackbird ver 2 and the Silver bullet.
I have the Black Bird II and the extreme,, they are the same.. and channel surf reasonbly fast too. Have not found a guide yet.
I have 5 dishes on mines, I have over 600 channels.. but there is a overall channel list that scrolls really fast.. All you do is choose the channel and press enter. If its coded..the unit scrambles it.. and stores it.. for the next time, you wont have to wait for it to open up again. It Pops up immediatly.
There is a firmware update that will allow you see all charlie and express Vu sats or any other sats that have the same encryption method. After the unit is flashed with the new firmware... it will then auto-generate the proper keys and open up that channel. Your FTA must have a serial port...with it you perform the upgrade.
It works very well.. Might I add.. No more cards, no jtags, nothing.. plug, upgrade ..your done. No scripting, nothing.

Thanks kneedeep, apreciate the feed back.
But is this only going to be a temp thing? i mean i spent like $500 getting set up for dave, and 6 months later the HU was dead. Just don't wanna get burned again, ya know
I'm sure that EVENTUALY they will find a way to stop this, but do you personally think it's going to be in the near future????

I don't have an answer for you.
But I can tell you this.. charlie has not started an upgrade program for their stuff..
they are using the same technology so far..If they stop the current method of encryption, than all there customers will be out of watching TV.. So I guess it will be highly unlikely that they can do anything about it anytime soon.
Remember, that if the auto key logger stops working, you can always flash back to the older version,, then you input the key manually.. I have seen many sites online that have this info available.
good luck

i for one have a fortec lifetime. after 2 months of messing around with it. i still get nothing! nothing at all. the unit was given to me from a friend after he spent weeks trying to get it to work. so, don't get your hopes too high on these. thank god i didn't pay for that fortec lifetime.

Well i actually read on another site that charlie is doing some kind of upgrade/remodel, and that FTA boxes won't be more than a paper weight after september time.....
