how do I get the 301.010 to take updates; have tried checking update with out permission then save and then I turn the power off but it doesn't seem to be updating

Hmmm, read all the other posts. It take awhile sometimes. Do not interrupt the update. or you will need to start from point a again. Still not sure, Some get updates allmost right away & others get them in hours. If you are POSSITIVE that you did everything right, let it sit & update!!!

What revsion are you at now?
P226 is the latest.
Leave it OFF overnight, set updates to without permission and then immeadiately turn the receiver off.

Try jumping it using paperclip untill light goes off
