Hi all, I am new to BEV and before getting started which receiver would be best to use?

ECM's hit receivers, Easiest to learn on are 2700/2800/3700 series, These are older and not as fancy as others, But easy to restore to working after hit. Once you learn the ropes moving up to more advanced irds is easier.

Thanks Birdie, when you say more advanced IRD's is it more advanced features? Don't all receivers get the same programming? Which ones should I stay away from?

not all receivers have jtags, the 1000,3000,4000 models are examples, there are a few others, you can junk yard fix these receivers but that is not a good way to do it. Stay away from them, like birdie said 2700,2800,3700 or easy to do. The 4700 which I believe is a bev receiver is also easy to work with and does have a few exrta options on it.

Basically yes, They all get the same, By more advanced I mean Picture in guide, PVR models etc. Newer receivers have larger and sometimes dual TSOP chips that can be more complicated to restore whil first learning on.
A example say would be a 3100. These are sweet units, But if the TSOP gets screwed up and the repairing does not go well, Can go into coma and be quite a project to repair.
I like the 3100 , Jtagable and has the pic in the corner plus a better guide ..
But like Birdie said the 2700 is easy .. But so is the 3100 ..

Yeah, I don't think I would have wanted to tackle a 301/3100 my first time around, I have one now and I love it. but definately learn the ropes before tackling it.

Right on Crazy1!!! The simple single chip easy to enter flash reprogramming mode is definatly the way to learn for greenhorns. As experience and abilties increase the 3100 is definatly a nice unit, But most need to kill a few first beyond repair to learn them.

I'm new to all of this as well. But after reading all of the info I have found I was thinking of jumping in with both feet - with a 301-13, doing the vid-mod and using a camless MC setup. Am I nuts??
Don't forget we are talking BEV here and correct me if I am wrong but I don't think there has ever been an IRD hit yet ?

301-013 is dishnet only, No good on bev.
13's are nice units but may need some mods. If you are good at electronics and soldering go with one.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, go for it.
However, I am not, so I picked up a 2700, Quad Jtag, and MC. And thanks to this site I and was up and running right away.
There are a ton of DSS sites out there, but due to the helpful members who don't flame you left right and centre, and well layed out stickies etc., this is one of the best.
Kudos to Milli, the mods, and helpful members once again.

I've been lucky I haven't killed one yet. I did mess up a 3000 receiver praticing to put a tsop lock on it, but that was before I even had the rest of the equipment to test with. I bought a rom 3, a 3000 receiver and a dish 500 with sw21 switch for 30 bucks so I didn't go wrong by frying a 3000! Other than that, I have yet to kill a receiver, I did corrupt my first 3900's tsop trying to jtag for the first time but I got another flash for it and it is still chugging along.

I have been hit on bev and got the "serious error has occured with your receiver" nag, I just got it up and running, I used the base file for mili's private blocker, the first slot for the cam id was all zeros and I didn't notice it, I was up and running and down and out in about a hour. So I can guarantee that bev will hit a receiver but I was definately asking for it! Perhaps with a good card in the slot not one without a cam ID in one of the three places for them in nagraedit, you will not get that error.
I've gotten serious error 153 when running a bad cam id on BEV...or rather, a good Charlie cam ID, but I was running it on BEV. So I also was asking for it the one time I've seen tsop hit on BEV. I can tell you I'm sure starting to appreciate BEV too. Since setting it up a couple months ago I haven't had to do anything with the cards or receivers.
