Hey Guys

I guess things have just been a bit to quiet around here, so of course , I told a friend I would help him out with a 501 ..I mean how hard could it be Right ?

So here wew go,

My buddy drops off a 501...I Installed my JTAG pig tail from the port..had trouble at first reading the BOX KEYS ....it would auto detect it as a 501 with jkeys, but always gave back jibberish, until I set it maually for a 301.10...then I did get the BOX keys.....dont know why maybe just lucky...I did try multiple versions of jKEYS.

OK so now that I had the keys...I went ahead and had him order the auto reset lock form ODDCIRCUITS (Mili didint have it yet) 105-C lock. I Installed that lock cut the trace...I put it in stream with Yellow card lock turned off.... I did a check switch got preview channels, picture was fine Menus working fine....NO SMOKE.

Checked firmware....P079...to old right....so I left the YELLOW card it came with in turned off the lock and the reciever set for update without permisssion and left it in the stream....and left it in the stream and left it in the stream....NO UPDATE.

So here I am....with these questions.

1. Should I do the VID MOD first....GT chip unfortunately

2. Should I leave the LOCK ON (doesnt seem that I should..that is the purpose of the lock right ..to prevent updates ?)

3. Should I just manually upgrade the firmware after the VID MOD ?

4. Is there anyway to test the lock installed. ...I am a little insecure about it..those pads are so damn small...worse than doing 11 d0's (Xbox reference).

Ultimately I want my friend to be able to use this with a MC.

Anyway I hope this is enough info to get started...I have read for days and I could probably do a VID MOD at this point with out the instructions in front of me, but as understand it the VID MOD is only to enable a TSOP alteration to allow the blue card/MC...should not be necessary to upgrade firmware..DO I HAVE THSI RIGHT ?

THanks in advance

Shouldn't have to, but it depends on the receiver. Some you can just stream update and the Blue cards work fine.

2. Should I leave the LOCK ON (doesnt seem that I should..that is the purpose of the lock right ..to prevent updates ?)

Nope. It must be off in order to take the update.

3. Should I just manually upgrade the firmware after the VID MOD ?

Sounds like your best option if the stream update is not taking place, but you really should figure out why it's not updating first.

4. Is there anyway to test the lock installed. ...I am a little insecure about it..those pads are so damn small...worse than doing 11 d0's (Xbox reference).

Yes. The instructions for doing so are with the instructions for installing the lock.

Put the switch in the locked position, go into favorites, add a channel, and then try to save it. If the lock is working as expected, it will immediately reset the receiver and you will be back on the channel you were watching.

I have read for days and I could probably do a VID MOD at this point with out the instructions in front of me, but as understand it the VID MOD is only to enable a TSOP alteration to allow the blue card/MC...should not be necessary to upgrade firmware..DO I HAVE THSI RIGHT ?

That is correct.

One last thing: Double and TRIPLE check your connections. Make sure you compare them with the specific instructions in the updated .zip file from OddCircuits, as the connections are wrong in the word doc. (I haven't checked in a couple of weeks, so it may be updated by now...)

Wow, thanks for the fast reply.
I didnt realize that favorite was a way to check the install I will be sure to do that straight away.....Does that mean that that function will no work with these modded/locked boxes.

I appreciate all the feedback..will play with it when I get home and keep you posted.

While I have your attention...do you prefer the VIDMOD with the 7812 regulator (Gunther's) or the one posted on Mili's site.

Thanks again

If it shows bootstrap 22 you will probably want to find a version of jkeys that supports 501 moved ird info, Then it will jtag correctly. Don't use 301 10 defs, The 501 has 2 4 meg chips, Not 2 2meg like a 301.

As always, honored to have MODS answer my posts.

Birdie...do you happen to know which version of Jkeys will support a "moved" 501 as you put it.

I have lots to do tonight.....and I ain't talkin 'bout the wife

Sorry about the deley, I bumped the power strip and crashed the computer.
It's not 301c, I think I had used 299b on those. I don't have all the versions on this computer here, They are on the other one at home. Anyway, When you jtag it the right version will show in the receiver drop down box, "501 moved ird info". Otherwise the 501 shows ird r00-0000-0196 and boxkeys all F
