Just curious if its possible to "test" internet via satellite. I have heard of some companies offering it including BEV. Not sure about Charlie. Can someone confirm if its possible?
Thanks

wouldn't that be nice . but no . there is 2-way communication involved , therefore not hackable

what you might be able to do is set up a wireless net and share the cost with your neighbours...

What there offering ( directv, dish , Bell) is just a combined service thing ( combine bills , were you just have one bill for both , its not internet through sat rather companies like earthlink are combingin offers with dish and Bellsouth with Directv and So on , All there trying to do is make sat more appealing to people who like cable because of ALL- in -one bills , thats it!

bev offers direcpc which is one way high speed you still need a dial up provider,so you get dial up upload and high speed downloads via the sat. another provder out there is direcway this is two way high speed sat internet, not as fast as dsl or cable, but extremely faster than dial up, but not really good for those who like to online game. you can not test any of these.

I disagree with 001438 as I got a Direcway sat. internet connection which is superfast (ping 64-127ms); I can even do VoIP. It just doesn't work well when it rainsbut you're right about $$$$ It's more expensive than DSL(700$ installation and 60$/month), so go with it only if you have no alternative.

with model DW6000 ( the latest) it is independent from the computer and goes through a router, so you can setup a network, even with a wi-fi

Everything that I have read says that it pings pretty high. I guess they were wrong. I have always wanted to find out from someone who actually had how it was.
i ping at around 127
Toast.net has me sometimes at around 800kb on there performance test.
thats pretty good, considering I had a dail up account that topped out at 28kb and averaged 16 kb.
I have ICS with a laptop and it slows me done hardley none acutally it runs faster than my desktop.
I get it free so I dont know about the cost, Perk from my Job boss says I have to have high speeed so He gave me his dish and modem and he pays the bill!!!!!
He has T1 and we have to transfer stuff to each other to test computers for the line of work we are in.
only been down once during the hurricane that blew rain my way

I got a Direcway sat. internet connection which is superfast (ping 64-127ms)Whoa, are you sure you're not pinging a client on your network? I've had DirecPC when they first came out. The hardware was a PCI NIC that was connected to my BUD using the KU LNB, set to WestStar5. Next came the DirecWay DW4000, and now I have the DW6000, a pretty nice setup when used with a wireless router. As for you're ping times, I don't totally disagree with you, Im just saying those ping times (64-127ms) are frankly, unachievable. The average is more like 500-800ms, on a good day. In reality its more like 700-900ms. And finally, gaming is totally impossible.

Here is my ping result: I have no client on my network now and the IP address is DWay

Haven't tried gaming but as I said, I can use VoIP with some success.

Well that is a ping from your router not the internet, pint yahoo.com then post that.

The problem with Sat internet is you have a FAT policy. Fair Access Policy and if you download about 160megs all at once then you are cut off from connecting to the internet for 24hrs. So it is good for surfung but not for the internet junky.

Yes, just as I suspected, you are pinging your router. As I stated earlier, the average is 700-900ms. The ping time you see below is a very good one for sattelite. Try this and see what you get.

Funny story and true...I was playing SOF online using Direcway, and I managed to shoot myself. I fired the rocket launcher, and suddenly disappeared. When I reappeared and turned around, I took my own rocket in the face.....

I stand corrected. Here is the ping to my satellite router:

At under 700ms, it isn't too bad. You're right also with the FAP ( Fair Access Policy) which limits your daily intake to under 200mb. But if you are in a location like mine, with no electricity, let alone cable or phone, it is either Dway or nothing...
You can't do gaming but I save a bundle by using Skype for telephony via internet.
