hi i am thinking on buying a new 5900 bev pvr... not dish.... I am just wondering if any moderator or anyone that has one of these bev irds can tell me if they need to be vidmoded. I need to know this because i dont really want to get into the hassel of vidmods. Especially on these irds with harddrive... Thanks...

5900's do not require a Vid Mod however if you want to run it on DishNet you will need to do it.

That doesn't make any sense

why doesn't that make sense? Try running a 301.013 on bev, guess what, you can't. They don't support the 013, perhaps bev doesn't write-protect their ird's but yet dish as we all know, definately does. Jshin is a pretty knowledgable guy, I wouldn't second guess him,

Either the TSOP has a protected sector requiring a vid mod or it doesn't....in which case it doesn't need a vid mod. It has nothing to do with the provider but rather the TSOP chip(s) only. Not all Dish IRD's need a vid mod either. Not all 013's need a vidmod.... and its got nothing to do with not being able to use it on Bev.....the 013 can't be used on bev cause there is no firmware in stream to support it.

I am not arguing with you, but what you are trying to say is that your believe the tsop is write proteced from the factory then? the chip itself contains the sector that is write proteced, so whatever is put in this sector must be written in the factory?

Yes of course...at the factory. Yes the chip has a protected sector put in there deliberately by the factory to keep us testers out of there... hehe.. Being a smart testing community as we are we can get past these protected sectors by supplying voltage to the chip which enables us to read and write the protected areas on the chip. It's pretty simple and first started on the 301.013 (single chip ird)...The 2 X TSOP 013's don't need vid mod.... Unfortunately its a mute point as all new IRDs have embedded smartcard technology. So now they can keep us out...

You erase sector SA61 in Flash 2 and it should update to Dish but you will not be able to test with it until you downgrade the HD and do a Vid Mod.

With Bell yes. DishNet not unless you do a Vid Mod and change the HD to 80 gigs.
