suppose a guy was on a contract with a satellite provider. he runs with no phone line. he then decides to jtag his receiver and make backups etc. he then decides to run an atmega or some other form of testing device, not his subbed card. here is where it gets interesting. his provider phones him and asks why his receiver hasn't been phoning in ppvs etc. he then swithes his subbed card back in and restreams his receiver to be on the safe side he then plugs the phone line back in. would the sat provider be able to tell if anything fishy has gone on.

I don't think the providers can tell this way. Something fishy would have been e.c.m'ed.

In response to that sort of call I generally respond I never make any PPV purchases. I wait for the movies to come to the movie channels I sub to. HBO Cinmax ect.
As to the phone line. I don't have one hooked up. I checked with the phone company and they want 150.00 to install a line to the receiver. I'm not spending that kind of money for something as far as I'm concerned I don't need. If you want a phone line hooked up I have no problem with that as long as you pay for the installation charge. Since I never order pay per view I see no reason I should pay for something I'll never use.
If they start on the this is a DIY sort of thing with a splitter and 50' phone cord sort of setup. Just respond...Look I'm a idiot when in this area. I would rather have a professional do the hookup so my phone (which is very important to me come up with any reasonable reason. Someone on life support or whatever) is not messed up.

Phone line is a complete joke ....!!!..there made simple by SATAN..?..Tell them you have 5 dog's in the house and the nearest phone jack is 15 feet from the IRD..and you would have to run it on the floor ..and the Dog's keep eating it ..?...Make's me wonder why they have a phone for PPV service...some area's don't even have phone service..lol...Tell them you want a 500 mile phone line ..so you can take your cell with you when you leave the house..cabin ...ect ...lalalalaal

I read on a new contract recently; they'll charge you extra for each month in addition to the basic rate add on. Everymonth, if your receiver calls in, they'll refund you the extra charge.

Come on guys, it's testing 101 - NEVER hookup a phone line into ird, while you are testing.....:)

stas101 has a good point.
Taking it one step further. If you want to test and also want the backup of a sub receiver then buy another receiver to test with. Never test with your sub unit. This also gives some advantages as well. Recording one program while watching another just to name one.
No one ever said this hobby was cheap.
