I am purchasing a 4900 and want to know if I can just use the MC and
J Tag Programmer without buying a Digital Lock as I am unsure about
my soldering skills and don't want to ruin the receiver.
Besides using a Dish 500 with Dual LNB and SW21 any other parts
I will need.
Thanks

You don't have to have a digital lock. If you don't want to jtag everytime you get hit, you can use jkeys to save your tsop file and then use flashedit to write a "softlock" which works like the digital lock except it's software instead of hardware.

Thanks, where can I go to get instructions or details on this softlock procedure.

Do you have flashedit? In flashedit all you have to do is open your backup tsop and click the radio button that says "write softlock". Takes care of it for you.

The current 4900 firmware is P217. Softlocks wont work with this revision.

I was unaware of that. But would it work if you could find an older revision tsop? Flashedit is just a standalone program. No setup or installation required. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting a URL so I apologize to the mods in advance if I am but....check out this site. It should be very helpful when beginning testing.

reportedly, softlocks worked with P216 and prior, but if you go back too far, you will not receive all channels...

Yeah I thought about it after posting. Do you know anything about 3900's. I think that's the problem I had with the new P232 that came out several weeks ago before the ECM's started. Totally went through my locks. I put old revision on P230 and turned off automatic updating and so far the lock has held up and all channels are still present. I hope that I don't have to take this update anytime soon if that's the case with the softlocks.

ok, so if I just install the auto digital lock as offered on the website that should do the
trick.
Also since I have inexperience at soldering I understand oddcircuits offers an
installation service and feedback about these guys
