Done some reading. Now I'm ready to purchase the HD.
I'm going with:
From skinerd's list.
Maxtor 4R080L0 Maxtor 80 160,086,528 5400 Yes * SYS INFO Screen will report IRD Model as 508 if used
From what I have read the orginal drives were Quickview drives. So far on backorder everywhere I have looked. About 8 sites. Unless I want 20 drives. Then I can get all I want. :-) Did find them at two sites but they want 89 apeice + shipping. All the others want about 65 many of those giving free shipping.
So does it have to be a Quickview drive or will a DiamondMax drive work just as well?

All that matters is the 4R080L0, that's how it's listed in the firmware.
Computergeeks.com has the 120 gig on sale for $59.99, new.

t, I'm going through the same process with my 501. I'd like to go the Quick view route but I can't find one either, even harder getting one shipped to Canada. What makes you think the original Hd is a Quickview? I thought that was a new Maxtor line. I like the idea that the QV is made for the PVR but maybe it does not matter.

Skinerd, Can a 120g be used in a 501? Would that give me the same record time as a 510 or a 508?

Yes, it will upgrade it to a 508, if resized to a 80 gig, and allow for 60 hours program record time. It must be resized or blue/MC won't work.

For all, this is the type of HD I used and it worked great went from a 501 to 508 used a virgin tsop 063 which is at the download section number 424 DCKD-063 and under: how to instructions download number 7 upgrade drive and follow those steps. When you save your virgin eeprom save it, under build use what ever says on your board. Do not use the tsop included in this instruction download. Follow does steps and you will succeed:
DIAMONDMAX 16 80GB INT ATA/133 5400RPM 2MB FDB and maxtor.com sells them for $80.00 each
