View Full Version : Feb 3 ECM - Here's What Happened

Here's a po-boy explanation of today's ECM, from bits and pieces I've gathered up browsing a few different websites.
This afternoon, Dishnet sent a bit of code down the pipe, designed to authenticate the CAM (your card) to the receiver. The opcodes, when passed through a normal subbed CAM, cause the CAM to send an Entitlement Management Message (EMM64) to the receiver - basically saying "I'm real, I'm not a pirate". In the case of a pirated CAM, the card, for one of three or four different reasons, either sends the wrong message to the receiver, or no message at all, resulting in the ECM we all saw.
The reasons the CAM would send an erroneous message are several. The code checks for inconsistencies in the following areas:
1) CAMID related (blacklisted or otherwise invalid)
2) Blocker related (public blockers, such as General Checksum Blocker)
3) PPV related (out of range eventID's)
4) PPV related (OC spending limits out of range)
An ECM could result from any combination of the above. One person might get tagged as a result of the eventID range being too loose - the next might go down due to a blocker hit, and so forth.
From what I'm hearing, this little experiment was quickly jerked from the datastream due to many legitimate subscribers being tagged (most likely CAMID related) ....of course, it could reappear in a different form at any time. It is not in the stream as I write this.
Well...looks like the technogeeks have got a long night ahead of 'em..... :p

so does this mean that since they were nailing subs, they put a fix back in the stream?
i am wondering cause i had the nag, turned it off for a while, and the thing is working again no problems.

Don't you just love it when legit subs get hit too........keep them phones ringing and the ECM dept on their toes, or gettin' their ass chewed good......

Actually, they just removed the code that they placed in the stream...but the effect is the same. No code, no problem. :)

how are the legit subs that got hit recovering from the ecm....i mean if they got the serious error message can the ird be restored via the stream?

They must have a way to fix it. This is not the first time I have heard of subs geting hit. I can't imagine they would overnight a new receiver to everyone legit that got zapped.

From what I have read from the different places, they hit wide tiers, narrow tiers, no ppv's, wide open ppv's. I have not heard of any sub getting hit, but the night is young. Would be interesting to know just what in the tiers caused this.

Doing some before and after Eeprom comparisions here, I have a hunch this wrote a change to the eeprom on the reboot.

From what I heard it was a duel type hit meant for the hacker, hitting the ppvs and on some receivers and scripts ecming the irds. And yes they did get some subs. The subs call Dish and from the stream they reactivate the card back to normal. The sub cards getting hit didn't effect the irds. The hit was only in the stream for a while. They can run it constant or at intervals. My guess is there testing before the superbowl-then look out, they will figure how to do it without hitting the subs-DTV used to do that all the time

:) This is how I fixed mine: Running an Atmega + 3900 & Atmega + 301.010, I simply performed an appropriate sector erase for each IRD and re-wrote the Atmega with the exact pfg + cam that I was running before. Been up and running for 8 hours. Just a simple rcvr hit if you ask me. I beleive the ECM was meant to do other things but as previous threads indicated, subs were victim too so Charlie pulled out. If that's the case, somebody is getting a good ass reaming at Dish HQ this morning :D
I haven't tried a my Rom 10 yet. I plan on it but if someone already did it, please post your results.

this does look like old employees from DTV that lost there job after the P4/D1 came out and there was no hack... lol

The one thing that i have noticed is the locals won't come on. I have tried everything and can't get them to come in. I even had a 301-13 receiver that was not hooked up to the stream,so i hooked it up this morning and my locals were comming in,so i unlocked the card and read it and saved it and locked it back, but when i put the card back in the receiver the locals were gone.

I am running 3 irds:
1. One with an ATMEGA card did not get hit running A-OK!
2. Another ird subed OK did not get hit.
3. The last ird was with a MC1 got hit and went down and stayed down. I was using in the Polaris fix about 6 days old.

funny u sa y that. i got lazy with my .013. so yesterday after the ecm, i checked location id, and it was fine, so i decided to back up my flashes and eeprom. flashes went fine, but when i tried to save the eeporm, i got a message screen that says:
To enable programming, it is required that the processor be:
A. Reset in boot from link mode.......
B. Allow jkeys to initiate flash programming....
i'm sure u seen this before. i've done a few .010, and never seen this message before. it ended up saving okay(it saved something anyway) and was 8kb, but the .010 i did was 2 kb?
i'm up and running though.
is this normal with eeprom save on a .013 dual tsop?

Some 13's, not all. 8KB is the eeprom size and is correct.
Some 13's will try to read in more that 8 KB if you don't follow your post above.

Did they get subs with this ECM? Read this......(posted with permission from member Slaydog)
"This is in regards to a question yall were discussing yesterday about paying sub's getting whacked and dish being able to fix via the stream......
My paying 2 room system (1 receiver for 2 rooms/ no card) went down yesterday at the same time as my rom10 and atmega system died...black screen on subbed system, no error message....dish attempted to repair via stream(no go), then they had me power and software reset(no go) new IRD is being express mailed and a 5 day credit posted to my account...."
Bet this little trick cost Charlie a hell of a lot more than it cost us... :p
