There are 2 kinds. PC to PC or PC to regular line (don't know if it works with cell).

PC to PC is free except for hardware and PC to regular line is a per min fee usually about 2 cents a min plus the hardware.

Basically you need a usb phone and you call out over your pc just like you would a regular phone. Sound quality is pretty good.

You can buy a usb phone on ebay for 20 bucks.

There used to be one called "Dialpad.com" Last time I used it was about 5 yrs ago while in school. US only I'll have to see if it's still there

Just ckecked it's no longer free .
When I used to use it there was a bit of a lag. PC to phone any ways never done the pc to pc. All ya needed was a mic and speakers on your pc oh and a fast connection (made lag better, but still there)

its called VoIP (voice over internet protocal). There is a few ways to do it but the"free" way (you still need to buy the phone) is to download "skype" and anyone who has skype running on their computer and has the special phone can call each other just like a regular phone for only the cost of the phone and your net connection.

The phones or the adapter to turn a regular phone into a skype phone can be had on ebay for cheap.

Why dont you use the voice option in MSN Messanger or use a proggy called Team Speak.
If you both have a Mic you can talk just like normal..

I have used both & they both work just fine..
Since we left all our family in Canada I use it regularly to talk with them way better then just typeing..Best thing is its 100% free only thing needed is a Mic & speakers on your PC..

I have used both and they don't work nearly as well as skype. The big advantage with skype is if you buy the adapter (bought 2 on ebay for 15 and 18 dollars yesterday) you can hook up your cordless phone to it and use it just like a regular phone.

I wanna beable to call from the internet to somebodys home phone and some how be able to receive calls. My phone company charges me $35.00 a month for a landline phone without long distance. Cell phones are a option but don't get real good signal here.

Do a search on VoIP. There are providers that do just that. You can send and receiver calls over the net just like real phone.
vonage.ca (if in canada)
skype.com
business.com/directory/telecommunications/ip_telephony/ (this one is a good list of providers for voip)

I've been using Lingo for 5 months with little probs (sometimes cuts out like cell phones). 24.99 a month plus a state tax...mine runs me about 26.30 a month with unlimited calls to and from US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Works good enough for me when I have to do alot of calling. Also, Vonage is another one. Haven't dealt with them, but hear they do good as well.

Don't get MagicJack...quality is horrible and the final cost is about $50 (1st year included).

I have broadband and the quality is still horrible...gave it to my daughter.

Lingo is as good as vonage and $10 less. The thing to remember with the VOIP phone is if your downloading or especially uploading heavily, even with broadband or cable, it will effect your connection quality. VOIP phones get as good or better connections than cell phones and should cost less than $20/month with a full minute and services packages. You get every service there is basically with the VOIP phone service.

I use a magicjack and the sound quality is very good. I have no complaints with it at all.
