View Full Version : Fried 510?

Okay, so I installed jtag, vid mod and installed digital lock. Got box keys, backed up tsops 1 and 2 and eeprom, then tried to erase and write to flash 2. Now, I have the OJ1 jumper set up to the DPDT vidmod switch, and checked to see if I was getting 12 volts at the switch. Sure enough, 12 V. I tried to JTAG again and got the DCU peek error in Jkeys. Fan is running but no light on front of IRD. I double checked my connections and noticed on U7 chip what appears to be a slightly raised area that says -90EI. Could this mean its fried? (By the way, I did the 4 wire 2 cut vid mod) If this one is fried, can I replace Flash 2with the good one and leave Flash 1 footprint empty? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

It needs both chips......sounds like something is not exactly right with your mod....I have done about 60 510s and never fried a flash chip....fried a CPU once (stupidly), but never a flash chip.

Well, I checked all connections and checked the trace cuts. Where would be a good place to start? JTAG was working when I got keys, now I just get DCU peek error, and light does not come on (although fan is operating). Any way to tell is CPU is fried? Thanks again.

If the chips are erased, even partially, then you must jump OJ1 to get past the DCU peek errors...
Is the flash chip in question VERY HOT??

OJ1 is jumped when vid mod on (dpdt switch wired one side with OJ1 and vid mod on other). Last thing I did was check the voltage on the switch pole where wires and and b are connected with switch in on position. I used a digital volt meter + lead to switch, - lead to chassis. The chip was hot to touch but not very hot.

Since skinerd can admit it, I will too....lol.
I've wired my mods backwards before, and shot 12V through the board instead of the TSOP. Double-check everything. There is always a reason.
If your Processor get's hot as hell and a funny electrical smell finds its way to your nose, then something's toast.
In a related story....I have a brand new seagate HD for a 508 for sale....lol.

Thanks for the moral support, I did notice on double checking my connections that I have 2 different locations stating where OJ1 is (one shows 2 pads, a square one and a circular one next to R148, the other shows 2 tiny solder pads right below OJ1). Does anyone happen to know which pair is correct?

Found out I had the wrong OJ1 connection. JKeys is reading, although it is giving me unknown message. When I pick 508, I get all FFFFF's. Should I just write the bin file PVR508-17DB-DCTA-10S-P067-U7-VIRGIN.bin to flash 2?

Well, it wont let me write to Flash either. When I go to flash programming, it gives me the flash code not recognized FFFFF message. Does this mean the flash is erased or fried. Thanks in advance for all the help, especially Skinerd.

Is the messaga FFFFFFFF/FFFFFFFF or FFFF/FFFF........??
It makes a difference as to what to do to get by that......
FFFFFFFF/FFFFFFFF means no communication............
FFFF/FFFF means blank unrecognized flash chips and can be dealt with by editing the jkeys def file.

It says flash codes returned by jkeys not recognized. Mfg/device codes returned are FFFF/FFFF (Jedec) and FFFF/FFFF (flashfile)

You need to look at the flash chips, get the number, will either be 323GT or 320DT,
then edit that flash in the jkeys def file to accept FFFF as a flash type.
Chips are prolly 323GT but I have seen some 320DT chips lately, and yes they are locked, not unlocked like the 323DT chips would be.

I had a similar problem with a AR105C lock installed. I had to remove it then re-install it before it went right for me.

I have the AR105C lock installed but in unlocked mode. How did you remove the lock (ie after trace cut and lifting of pin 7 on eeprom)? I will try editing jkeys def. My flashes are 320DT's. Thanks again.

Got in changing Def, now do I just reflash U6 and U7 with my backup bins? Do I write to address 7F800000? Thanksl

If you need to marry the hard drive, no they won't.........
Use any "moved ird info" type virgin flash to marry with.
I use a DFJA P080 virgin flash to marry DFJA and DFHA PVRs with and stream the up.
You can leave U6 blank, or write the U7 bin to it, I have done both, leaving it blank usually works fine. Just erase U6 then erase U7 then write the U7 bin to U7 and it should work.

oppsss skinerd, sorry i didn't notice the date on the post. but I have a 5900 PVR that was converted to 508 to work with N1 at the good old days. Now, I want to convert it back to 510 to enjoy the latest break through. My Ird has a Vid mod switch, a lock and an internal emulator which were all not installed by me, a friend of mine did that.
So now I have the Jtag ready and when I downloaded JKays for 5900. When I connect with JKays it detects it as 501, then I changed the drop down menu to 510. But when I try to get into the flash mod, i get the "flash code unrecoginzed .......FFFF/FFFF" (i dodn't remmber the exact wording of the message, but i guess you know what i mean.
I read around the forums and some poeple suggested it might be the lock, which is too bad of a solution for me since I dont' want to really miss with the lock given my lite expriance with hardware. So I just wonder if this is something that could be fixed by changing the JKays def file?!! it would be sweet if that was the case :) .... BTW I also had a jumper on OJ1 when trying to read it, and i did multiple trial with the lock on/off.... any help would be appercaited.
thanx

I doubt it is the lock, I have no idea what was done with the internal emulation, so it would be hard for me to say what needs to be done.
You can try to edit all instances of 0x2250 to 0xFFFF in the jkeys def file. and see if that gets you in, but will have to cjhange the FFFF back to 2250 after writing a new flash.

thanks skinerd for the info. I found few instances off 0x2250 on the 301, 501, 510 and down in the flash difinitions were it saya:
Flash , 3 , "29DL323T", .......
Do I need to change teh instances in the four areas? and do I uses the modfied def for reading and writing to the flash?
cannot wait to get home and give this a try :)

I always change all instances, with a find and replace in notepad, then you can go back and reverse the replace with the correct numbers.

i'm trying to find a step by step instruction as of how to move on from here, but unfortuntly i don't seem to remmber where i saw that.... could u guide me through steps of flashing my Ird to marry the drive and so forth. I have virgin p080 flash ready, but not sure of what to do...
thanx in advance..

actully when I tried to erase the two tsop's in Jkeys, the process returned almost instantly... so i did that few times for each tsop... and when i wanted to write the moded bin i got the message "the tsop the not blank, continue anyway?"... i pressed ok and writting to the tsop started, but in the middle of that i keep geting the message "Error programming the flash at offset 0x7fccffd0"...!!!
i guess the tsop's and not proberly earsed... any help is appreciated!!!
thanx

Sounds like something is interfering with the read/write of the tsops....maybe lock or emulation that was installed....
