I'm in the process of upgrading the 40 gig HD in my 501 to an 80 gig. I downloaded the instructions from the how-to section on here. The instructions say that when saving the virgin EEPROM file in Flashedit to enter DAWD as the build configuration. It also gives Flash 2 with a build of DCWA to be edited with Flashedit. Will these work with my receiver since it's build is DCED and the Flash is DCEA or do I need to use another Flash that has the same build as mine?

Went ahead and used virgin TSOP and eeprom that matched my receiver's build after editing with flashedit and it worked like a charm. Had a slight problem jtagging after I erased Flash 1 & 2 but did the OJ1 mod and the rest was a piece of cake.

If it's brand new out of the box you don't have to format it. Just be sure it's one that's compatible with the receiver. I went to Seagate's website to get the utility program and the Disc Wizard is the right one. You want to zero fill the drive or what's usually known as a low level format on it and that's it.

A PVR hard drive requires NO format, quick zeroing is good enough for a used drive ( and is very quickly done) and new drives are already zeroed....
I use Maxblast 3 on a bootable floppy, it works with Seagate and Maxtor drives....
Some drives will not work in the PC with the jumper on CS and need to be set for master, some work fine at the CS setting....

All I can find locally are Maxtor models 8R080L0... can't locate models starting with "4"... Ugh.

The 4R drive types are coded into the flash, used to be you could edit the flash and use whatever you wanted, that is no longer true....
