View Full Version : Only getting odd transponders??

I have a 3900 receiver , dish 500 and just installed a new sw21 switch. I am only getting odd transponders on bith birds. I checked the dish pointing and am getting 120% on bird 119. When I was playing around with the receiver I was able to get where it would show me both signal strengths, but I can't find my way back to that screen. Does anyone have any idea on what may be wrong. Thanks for the help.

Show you both signal stength meters at the same time? That is old firmware if so and needs a update. That would cause signal and transponder problems.

That's what I'm thinking. I turned it on and only get a blank screen. I think it is updating. Does anyone know what the latest firmware version is for a 3900? Also now that is has a switch, how long does it normally take to up date?

Should update within 15 - 20 minutes.

hey, when I do a check switch test it says vital update blah, blah, blah. If It is soft locked will it still update?
sukh77

Yup it will update and write over your softlock. Meaning you will have to add softlock back on.

It looks like it took the update but still no even channels. I have another switch coming although I don't think that's it. This sucks

You don't have Dishpro dish do you?

how old is the cable or switches? do you have a rain loop? or can the rain water get into the switches.

Try moving the dish around a little bit. I had this problem on a 301 with single LNB dish 300, it was only picking up 1 side of the signal until I moved the dish a little bit east to west and both sides were in.

ok is your strenght good on 110? or are you getting it at all
dish might not be skewed just right
your ends of coax might not be out enough ,(pass the rim of line, middle sec.)
just moving the dish a little will help, make sure 119 is on dish 1,110 on dish 2 on the check switch box, baby needs to be skewed just right to work properly.
just go over this check list, make sure your firmware is updated too.

Thanks I have done all that. It usually picks up trans 19. 119 gets 120% and 110 gets 109%. When I restarted it I got spot beam 1 with both at 120%. still no luck. I'll have to play with it some more. Thanks

Hey, moved the dish and still no luck. Is there special kind of cable that I need to use? I used just a basic coxal .

rg6 , dont use that thin coax (rg56) another checklist you can preform is
take off the satellite feed on reciever, then run a check switch, i know it wont pick
up anything, but it will clear out the switch check to all xxs.
when that finishes ,hook back your satellite feed again, run check switch
and reply back what happens jett. oh and tell us your fimware as of now too.
if that dont work i have one more trick you can try process of elimanation.

Mili does not want to open a DVB forum at present, but he has some DVB programs in the files section.
You are welcome to discuss DVB here in the FTA section if you wish.

I tried the switch test. no luck. I think it's the cable. It's r59, I'll have to run some R6. The software is version p234clba-f . I'll post me results after I run the new cable. Thanks, Jett

Remove the switch then do check switch with individual cables plugged in.

sukh77 That didn't work. I ran new cable, still no luck. I have another switch coming. I'll have to see if that works. Is there a sat I can lock on to that doesn't need the switch to get odd and evens?
smilingjack

You can run the dish right to the IRD without a switch, you will only get 1 sat but it is better than nothing.
Do a switch check again after you hook it up that way so it knows there is no switch.

SJ I did that and get 119 in to show in both number 1 boxes but only get odd in the priority box and a "x" in the other. I can't see both LNB's being bad. Maybe it's the receiver.
sukh77
04-04-2005, 01:29 AM
Now try moving the dish around. Leave the switch out of the line still. Do each Sat signal individually. After you get both odd and even then try adding the switch. New switch will resolve nothing if you can't get odd and even without the switch.

Well I just took my switch out and am getting some starange read outs, it shows a signal from both 110- + 119, without 119 being hooked up.
OK REALLY STRANGE
I unhooked the SW21, is is hanging from the 119 wire to the LNB
I am hooked up to 110 direct. Switch check says I have 110 + 119 odd + even.
I can get 105, 241, all the porn, all the ppv and every channel I tried.
I have no idea what is going on here 301.10 P-241 dish 500 legacy only 110 hooked up. have all channels.
CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN THIS.
sukh77
04-04-2005, 01:51 AM
Since it is a dish500 it might be picking up some signals from the other sat. You might have some transponders that don't have signal.
It strange though.

I should not have anything with the switch hanking in the air from the 119 lead.
The IRD should have said no switch attached and dropped the other channels too.
It always did before. This is weird. I get channels without the LNB and he can't get them with it hooked up.

strange, i had that same prbm while back, the only thing i concluded was
the 1 lnb was precisly in between both satellites to get both.

This is MY DISH 500.
I just unhooked it to see if I could answer a question.
I get a 120 / 120 signal
With the 119 cable & SW21 unhooked and hanging in the air a foot from the dish or cable the checkdish says 110 - 115 / 119 - 80 with all odd and even channels registering and I still get the channels on the screen
It would seem possible but unlikley that 1 LNB would get signals from both sats unless like you say it was in the middle.
BUT then how / why would check switch still report both LNB functioning ?
It should not do this it should say 1 sat only since it it not getting input from 1 LNB.
Wierd.......

have you ran a check switch at that state, makes you wonder what the hell is going on
maybe the firmware is allowing it to do that maybe.
if you want to get creative go outside and bump the dish, and move it back
and see what it does, you dont have to if you dont want to,you might lose that
miracle.
smilingjack
04-04-2005, 05:08 AM
Yes the checkswitch says I still have 2 sats 110-119, 119 has lost from 120 down to 80 but it is still registering.
I tried moving it, it is either there or gone completley, I hooked 119 and the SW21 up and it is back to 120/120
301.10 just took new firmware from 229 to 241, must be something in the firware, never did this before, I just lost the sat I unhooked and it showed with a check switch.
The new firmware was a long download, a lot longer than usual. And we know it has some different things in it.
ITs the switch still working that I can nto understand, it should not.

hey jett seems to me i had a couple of ird 3900 did the same thing, you can try erase
the sec. like it was ecmed and put back in stream, maybe it doesnt have all the information
stored correctly to produce a good check switch test.

May as well make the EPROM a virgin too and clean up the switch settings.

same results on a dish 500,i cant try im running dp.

How do I go about Making a virgin emprom? I read you can do it with flashedit but that only gives you a 2kb file. Do I not erase the old flash? or clean and write it back with out erasing the flash? That does not sound right.
smilingjack
04-05-2005, 01:44 AM
Open flashedit, load the EPROM in the program. The only option available is to save it as a virgin, so save it.
Put the virgin in your ird the same way you got it out.

when I go to save I have the option of a public dump, private dump, one other and than virgin. I'm using flashedit 2.0 a. When I choose virgin it does not give me a full bin.
smilingjack
04-05-2005, 02:20 AM
THE PUBLIC DUMP is for tsop .BINS when you want to give a copy away it erases your IRD * Box Key numbers.
THE PRIVATE DUNP is if you want to save the TSOP .bins as a back up for your self it has your IRD * Box Key numbers in it.
DO NOT LOAD the .bins just the 2kb EPROM then save as virgin, it is a very smal file and a virgin is the file with all information erased ready to be re-written.

I have 20a open in front of me, click on the little dots, pick the EPROMclick open, click on save as, it will say 'saveas cleaned EPROM and show a file to save it in if you want to use that file click save. it saves it as 'cleaned EPROM'
you are done put it in the IRD

Jett. Make a Virgin Eeprom with FlashEdit. It will want to know the build config or your 3900's board. Enter it and then save the Eeprom. Now Jtag your Receiver and go Eeprom Programming. Program the Eeprom with your Virginized one and then exit out of the Eeprom Programming. Now go into Flash Programming. Make sure that you unplug, plug back in, hit enter with 3 secs, and then erase the appropriate sector the 3900 three times. Restream the IRD with the card in it. After the IRD boots back up, 15-30 minutes, run a Check Switch. Report back when done.

Thanks I have it so far. Now the sector I want to erase, that would be the one as if it got hit with a ecm right. that would be SA30. than restream it.
#40Fan
04-05-2005, 05:30 AM
Yep, SA30, three times.

More than three is always better though.

04-05-2005, 05:57 AM
Thanks, I noticed that after I erased that sector I get no green light on the receiver when I power it up. Is that common? Now just pop in the card and plug it in. It will restream?
general

that is correct, you dont have to put card back in just hook up sat feed,
sit and wait, the light will flicker ,just let it go

It looks like its toast. All I get was a flashing turned solid green light but nothing else. Jtaged it again and it was corrupted. I erased and reflashed it I get a good read but, only get a green light nothing else. I have it back into the stream to see if that will help. But I think its dead. To jtag it I have to break down the ird and remove the broad. Something most of gotten damaged.
Ok here's an update: It updated in the stream and is working again. Only problem is I'm back to square one. I just picked up a 4900. I'll have to play with that when I get it. I'll mess around with this one when I have more time. Thanks for all the help.

Well turns out to be the LNB. I found an old Dave LNB I had laying around and smacked it on. I'm now getting both odd & even. Really piss's me off, because last night "shaving the beaver" was on channel 492. Yeah, I love leave it to beaver. They don't make then like that any more. :) Hey, thanks for all the help.
