You have several questions and there are many answers to them.
The expert here is JT he has one and knows all about them.
I have never messed with them but I am sure he can fix you up.
There are several threads here dealing with the problem(s) of 501's, do a search for them maybe you can find something helpful before JT comes on line.

Marrying is the key, along with compatible hard drive type, both have been thoroughly discussed here.........
What error number do you get????

Yep, told him there were a lot, to do a search for them.
No doubt about it, skinerd is the pro joe when it comes to any of the IRD's, and that goes double for the 5xx dishplayers. That's why he has the user title 'modifying moderator'. I'm pretty good with the non PVR models, but I've only worked on a few 508/510's. (actually, I know my way around the 7x00's pretty good) The 508 is still the best way to go IMO, but the 510 can be downgraded with a little effort. Thanks for the vote of confidence anyway though SJ....even if I didn't deserve it. :)

That's ok, you deserve the compliments, he does not come around a lot like we do and I know you know a lot about them, hell of a lot more than I do.

I don't know SJ. :) The skinerd has about as many posts as you and I put together. :p It's a little deceiving because of the editing of the posts Mili did a while back when he deleted a lot of the now useless Dave forums, but that just means what skinerd had to say was important enough to keep around. Skinerd takes the high road and doesn't post in all the BS threads that have come up lately. He still reads it all though. Nobody knows everything. We all have our little specialties. Basically all we can give sound advice on are things we have first hand experience with. Anyway, guess I'm just trying to say thanks to the man for all he's done to help me out in the past.
....damn, that turned into a sappy post. :)

I have to agree he does know his stuff.
Wish he was around more, I know I could learn a lot from him too.
I read all of the other mods posts, even the ones I do not understand. hehehe
I am just here to answer the easy questions, clean up and put out the garbage.
You guys are the experts.

Back to the Topic...
Have you tried to see if there is loose cable to the Hard drive??
YOu will need a Jtag, BK, a 40 or 80 gb Hard drive (Maxtor/Seagate) and a virgin (or a saved)TSOP.

That's a good pont, I don't know how those cables come loose, but they do....
The drives do fail too, they are ALWAYS recording....that's why you can pause and rewind live TV.

Hey skinerd, do we have to worry about the hard drive fragmenting like in a computer? And if so, how to correct it? I have the modded and j-tagged 510 receiver from Mili. Also if i understand it correctly, with the hard always recording when the receiver is on, does it always record over and over the same spot on the hard drive. I believe it records for one hour then starts over where it started one hour ago if i understand it correctly. Also, when you turn off the receiver, i know the video and audio go away, but other than that, the receiver is functioning, does the hard drive stop spinning when the receiver is off? Thanks in advance for all the answers and help.

When the show you are watching ends, Then it starts over for the live tv rewind . Yes, The HD frags and errors and it no longer works. It's a platter spining at 54 to 72 hundred rpm always going. Buy a nice DVD burner and copy it over as the HD will die.
