I just purchased a used 4700 off ebay. I am new to this, so please be patient if this is a stupid question.

I am having a problem getting the receiver to respond. I have tried hooking the receiver up via the coax and rca outputs (not at the same time) but all I am getting on the tv is a black screen. It makes now difference if the card is inserted or not. If I unplug the receiver the tv screen goes to static. THe sat input is not hooked up.

I am using tv inputs and cables that are known to be good. Am I having a stupid moment or is there something wrong with the receiver?

What did you program your card with? Which ROM are you using?Did you get the boxkeys?etc.,etc.
Post everything you've tried to get it to work since you got it

I have done nothing to the receiver. Before I started I wanted to make sure the receiver works. Am I correct in assuming that I should get something on the screen when I power the receiver up?

No,
at most you may get a note to insert your card.
You have to put a card in them to get them to do anything.
At least a black screen means the video output is working.

Most of them don't do anything without a card in them.

They are not like DTV's IRD's that still work if there is no card in them or a expired card in them.

I have started the receiver up with the card in it but the sat input disconnected.

Would this give me some video output or does the reciever require both the sat input and card to provide some indication that it still works?

You should be able to go the install and information menu's. get the numbers off those screens receiver ID # R00xxxxxxx-xx Location ID # (anything but 00001) Cam ID # S00xxxxx-xx

So if I am not getting anything but a black screen with the card in and the sat input disconnected then I most likely have a bad receiver, correct?

Bad software (TSOP) in the receiver, not usually a bad receiver.
You will need a J-Tag.
If you want to 'test' you will also need a testing device.
While it is late in the game to start there is still some time left before it all is gone.
Go up to the top of the page and click on the getting started btton.
The minimum you will need, and the easiest method is a J-Tag and a Magic card. Less to learn, less to do.
You can re-write the company cards, J-Tag and a card programmer. More to learn and more to do.
ATMega is another method, A ATMega card with programmer and a J-Tag.
There are other ways as well I suggest you do a lot of reading, start with the general dish and Bev section and the change over to N2 threads...........and go on from there.

Did you try using the "menu" or "info" buttons on the remote yet?

Smilingjack said that it is late in the game to start...does this mean that folks are thinking this hobbie may be on it's last legs like the DTV hobbie is/was ? I sure hope not I just dropped some bucks on recievers programmers and Jtags.

dish and bev are changing to a unbeaten encryption system, bev has a month or two left and dish has 6 months or so left then it will be just like DTV, all black until someone beats the new system.

I waited to buy the equipment because I thought a DTV hack was in the works...it never surfaced so I went ahead and got the necessary stuff. All I can say is I hope these are just unfounded rumors. With DTV it took much longer for them to eliminate the HU stream than many folks had imagined and I hope it is the same with Dish and BEV.

Bev is about gone now
and dish is going fast

I'm sure mili will come up with some of the newest best and most reliable hacks. Hey maybe there will be a hack for DTV by then.

Well, don't hold your breath. Mili's not optimistic that any hack will be done at all much less released to the public. You've only got a few months left. The porn and international channels are gone. Some Showtime and TMC channels will be gone by the end of June. Everything else will take about six months. It's really depressing dude.
But,if a hack does come out mili' will get it.

Just like when the tiers started dropping of DTV. I didn't realize they were dropping off Dish already.
