I'm running windows xp got 256MB RAM. Each time I connect to the internet my computer slows down to a snail's pace and eventually freezes. It's not the modem because i tried a different one and the same thing happens. I also used microsoft antispyware to remove any adware or spyware from my pc. I scanned using pc-cillin antiviral software and my system showed up clean. The pc works normal until i dial up my connection and connect to the internet!

Can anyone suggest possible causes of and solutions to this problem? Thank you.

Do you re-boot your pc at least once a day to free the physical RAM ? 256MB RAM is way to light, I would suggest more RAM even if that isn't the problem. When your pc slows down to a crawl, re-boot and start surfing or whatever, if the pc perks up then it's not releasing the physical memory. Let me know if the above helps you out.

Try using spybot search and destroy and spyware blaster.
They are both free and update the programs regualry also free.

Open your internet options file in the control panel and tell it to delete your cookies and also your history there.

SJ, nothing wrong with the cookie dump except, it will just slow him down even more. Spybot is good and will rid the tracking cookies though.

The history goes on forever and will slow you down and even deny you access to sites if it gets too big.
The cookie dump does not just dump the cookies in the local disk/documents and settings/admin/cookies

It also dumps the 'temp' file that is not really a temp file which sometimes gets filled mega bytes or even giga bytes of other cookies that are in a hidden file which will really slow you down.

Every time you load a internet page it outs a cookie in there, I clean mine at least once a week since I view hundreds of pages daily and each one leaves one hidden cookie.

The down side is you will have to log into each site manualy since the cookies usually do it for you. IT really does speed things up and the two spyware programs I told him about are good and best of all free and updated all the time. They will speed him up too.
Open that hidden file sometime and see what's in there, mine is always littered with thousands of mili page referances/cookies

I just looked at mine I am overdue to delete, there is 80.22 M.B. of cookies in there

C:/documents and settings/admin/local settings/temp/temporary internet files
