View Full Version : Windows XP serial keys....
Does anyone know how they work?
Is there an individual key for every disk? A range of keys for each disk? All legitimate keys work for any disk?
The reason I ask is I was talking to a tech at microsoft and he claimed that only one key will work with each disk. I thought that I had used different keys on the disk but now I am wondering whether I have or not.
Seems to me production costs would be to high to make each disk individual and would make large scale pirating very difficult if not impossible.

for the most part any key for a specific version will work with any disc for that version, like xp pro retail will work with any retail key, OEM discs may have there own OEM keys, corporate editions will work with any corporate key...to the best of my knowledge and experience anyway. But I do know that each disc does NOT have individual keys hard coded into them.

There are two (2) keys on every disk.
The one you have and a hiden key.
If you find a key 1 that will work and let you install the program it may not let you get updates, it will be a illegal disk, you will not know until you try to load say SP2 then it says bad key and refused to update the program.
Then you have to try key 2 which may or may noit let you install the program and if it does it may of may not let you take updates.
Then try 3, 4, 5, 6 until you get two (2) keys that match M$ records, then you have a good legal program key set.
There are not that many combinations, they are lazy like magician and his keys/passwords.
It took me 4 number tries to get a disk which M4 recognizes as legal.
The hard part was the activation, corporate editions do not need to be activated.
The activation can be disabled. That's a little harder. It took me hours to disable it.
( the 1000 is not actual it may be 10,000 or 100,000 each disk)

Thanks guys. I have my own xp going at home no problem.
The reason I was asking is that 2 of the computers at my work had retail versions of xp pro upgrade on them. One got fuc#ed cause my boss in a tool when it comes to computers so he hands me his laptop with the recovery disks and says fix it.
He was not worried at all about the files on it so I thought what the hell I'll reformat it. What he failed to mention was that there was a xp pro retail upgrade on the laptop and that the recovery disks were only xp home.
So I reformat the computer. Now if I had been thinking I would have asked him if those were all the disks. Seeing as the computer is reformatted all traces of the xp pro upgrade are gone, including the cd key.
So I ask him for the upgrade disk, which he can't find. If I had known about the upgrade beforehand and known he didn't have the disk I could have recovered the key before refomatting and used the other retail install disk that we have, keeping all our licences intact but...to late for that.
So I called microsoft to see if they had a record of the key anywhere. I though maybe during an upgrade they might log this type of info or something.
Well the guy I talked to said that even if he could give me the key it wouldn't work cause each disk has a code on it and that code is used to generate the key and only a key generated from that code will work for that cd.
Of coarse the the 5 computers that I run at home using the same setup disk and different keys shouldn't work then.
I didn't say that to him but did say that I wasn't buying that. Seems to me that it would be pretty expensive to produce the cds that way.
Guess he is stuck buying another upgrade cd.

The link I gave you has the numbers.
Just start the install and when you get to the key part go there and get a key number from them.
