Newbies...warning before embarking on FTA

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nagra2 is upon us. Black screens lay ahead. If you are considering buying an FTA receiver for the purpose of seeing Dish Network, your time is now limited to a couple of months or less. There is no receiver that currently has Nagra2 capability.

Bell ExpressVu, one of the two major providers that have been tested by FTA hobbyists, is now 100% secure with Nagra2 as of 7/15/05. Dish Network has at this time switched international channels, porn, and several premium movie channels. Pay-per-view and the rest of the premium channels will be gone very soon. In the next few months, everything on Dish Network will be using the extremely secure Nagra2 encryption.

There has been some optimistic talk from some insiders about a process called "Card Sharing" but all videos showing card sharing have been revealed to be fakes. If there is a light at the end of the tunnel, it is between the lines of the Pirate TV channel now being shown on Dish Network. The announcer claims that "Dish Network will be implementing new types of Electronic Countermeasures..." This suggests that perhaps DN is aware that hackers are working on solutions. But absolutely nothing credible has yet to come forward.

The reason I'm saying this now instead of a few months back is because the cost of purchasing a complete FTA system to be used with Dish Net no longer justifies what you would save over having a subscription. Nagra2 is now right around the corner and Nag-1 channels will soon be dropping off on a daily basis.

If you do buy FTA equipment at this time, it is advised to buy with the intention of viewing True free-to-air satellite TV. This consists of A FREE TO AIR DISH. Several network affiliates, international programming, and a handful of variety programming, news, and music channels.

I've been a respected member at this site for well over a year now. This site and its members are like family to me. That's why I don't want to see anyone get scammed by dealers with false promises. I'm laying the hard, ugly truth right out on the line so that people can make informed decisions.

Crow,

That is a very good post and good advice for everyone. I would like to see members of this forum go forward into FTA. The startup investment is not that bad and would be worth the investment for those who are interested in staying with the hobby.

It's true that the programming is much different and many would find it unattractive. For those members who are looking for the same type programming they get now, a sub. is exactly what they need. If people stay in the hobby, they learn, the more people that learn new things can open avenues toward future developments that could benefit many of the current members of this forum in the future.

This is a family at Mili's, a very nice bunch of people. FTA is all they have left and maybe it would also keep this forum alive. You mention Electronic Counter Measures in your post, this is nothing new and will not go away even if N2 is compromised in the future. That is not a relevant factor.

I thought that Charley used this tactic just to make sure that the new subscribers would actually have enough money left over each month to make their payment! After all, he wants the subscribers to buy more programming from him that he does not offer in his startup packages. Charley spends about $497.00 per new subscriber, if they need new equipment. Murdoch has deeper pockets, he spends about a third more and is willing to spend whatever it takes to keep Charley from getting a subscription. Charley does not want to spend the money on the testers that he labels pirates. He rather that the pirates use old outdated equipment until he is sure that his system is secure. Now with all that said, I like Charley, I think all of us should do our part and help him as much as we can in the coming years, we may need him again someday. He certainly needs us now. My advice is, if FTA is not your bag, subscribe to Charley, NOT Murdoch. Charley is a fair man!
