Can a model 3900 receiver be used in PR, or would I be better off getting a 301 or 501 model?
Will the premium channels be the only ones they will lock out soon?

The 3900 is ok but it is a older 're-furbished' model taken as trade in's and re-done by the mfg. It has since been discontinue.

The newer 301.10 or 501 would both be better and there are so many 301.10's around they are cheap now.

All the channels will be gone, very soon, unless there is a new hack found.

Personal preference only but I would go with the 501.

You can record a great deal transfer to DVD and watch at your leisure.

The best bet would be a dedicated comp for video. With about two
200 gig drives. Or four. Then transfer all the 501 recordings to it.

A 200 gig would be about 180 hours without compression. Much more
if your not that intrested in quality.

Record it now watch it later. May come in handy in the next few months or more.

My self, I prefer DVD's Made from the original factory disks, since I do them anyway I have 1,500 movies on DVD's.

I also have capture cards in several computers with 700 to 800 gig's of storage that I can hook to the IRD's jacks and record direct from IRD to computer then burn on DVD at lesiure.

Not as good a quality as a factory DVD rip but good quality.

SJ is it just me or is the ultimate solution. I have about 1200 movies as well as easily 150 complete series of show's on a couple computers.

Never watch any of it. Other then new stuff who needs any TV delivery system. I could easily go years with no provider at all. At least at the rate I have the free time to actually watch it.

well it costs $ 2 to $ 3 to rent a movie and half hour to rip it, complete with dolby and surrond sound and the best quality you can ask for.

But some things are not on DVD so I record and burn the one's I want to keep.

The PVR's are more expensive and unless you dump them to a disk or computer you can lose them with a single ECM. They are temporary storage at best, DVD's are good for years. and you can always give copy's of them away as presents, hehehe

Even with all the computers I have (7) I also have a shelf with a dozen full hard drives on them I don't have room for in the computers. (iPlus 300 or so hours of porn)

I hardly ever watch it either unless I am out on the boat with nothing else to do.

I think you are right it is the ultimate solution.
