Anyone else have cell internet. I use phone as a modem and it get me on internet with laptop where ever I am. Thinking of getting the wireless card for high speed and wondering if it picks up as good as the slow but reliable phone mode

Well... I work for a cell phone company.... Don't bother with the cards, waste of money. They are not any faster than your cell phone would be and you have to pay a MUCH higher monthly rate. For Verizon Just dial #777 (using a data cable of course) and you'll connect at 128k on a 1X connection and if you have an EVDO phone you'll connect at the same Broadband speeds as their PCMCIA card counterparts aprox 240k with bursts up to 2mb. The new EVDO network is freakin fast (for a cell connection that is). As for the other providers their data services are a joke in comparison. Your best bet is to get an EVDO phone and get VCAST, if you have VCAST you are allowed unlimited bandwidth (it may use your minutes, it may not, I’m not 100% sure). Without VCAST you may be charged (again I’m not 100% sure here). Using it as a modem is not allowed per Verizon policy, but it does work and it beats the $70+ monthly charge for the broadband pc cards and I've never heard of them doing anything about it.
Personally I have a Samsung i730 Smart phone with the unlimited data plan; which kicks ass. I can use it as a modem for my computer, but I've found I rarely do because the phone itself does just about everything my laptop can do. Downside about having a smart phone is that you need a data plan or they charge per KB you download. They don’t do this for normal phones, don’t ask me why..
Fubr, I don't know how you connect or the provider you have, but if you are dialing up to your personal ISP your going to get horrible speeds. If you dial #777 (Verizon only) you'll get the max the network supports and it's free..

Thats because CDMA technology is far better than PCS and GSM, in speed and reliability. Hence the reason Verizon has the best network. Like I said above, you'll get 128k on the normal network (3G1X) and if you are in the new EVDO areas you'll get over 240k w/ burst up to 2mb. And I can vouch for those speeds, I use it nearly everyday.
The main point is, don't get an air card, get a data cable for your normal phone and get the same results. Or even use bluetooth for a wireless link (may need to mod the firmware on your phone).
I use the data cable and I dont use verizon and I have unlimited data plan, come in very useful since I can move 2 or 3 states in a days time I can use it anywhere I go
thanks 4 nfo
BTW I got samsung 427 and provider is cingggulaar. so I dont think I can dail *777 because they do not play well together.
Think I will read up on this shit this W/E any suggestions where to read

Voice Stream has a USB plug in gadget that uses cell phone channels.
looks like my U.S.Robitcs USB wi-fi.
$ 30 a month, unlimited, slow but as fast as wi-fi and leaves your cell phone for talking.
NO modification needed just plug it in to the USB port
