President's Radio Address
In his weekly radio address President Bush said, "The terrorists cannot defeat us on the battlefield. The only way they can win is if we lose our nerve. That will not happen on my watch. Withdrawing our troops from Iraq prematurely would betray the Iraqi people, and would cause others to question America's commitment to spreading freedom and winning the war on terror. So we will honor the fallen by completing the mission for which they gave their lives, and by doing so we will ensure that freedom and peace prevail."
My source for the above is http://www.whitehouse.gov/
Bush won with a narrow margin in 2000 against Al Gore, remember the whole "chad" debacle? He also won the 2004 elections by a very narrow margin, somewhere around the 51% mark. His approval rate is now in the 30th percentile of the U.S. population. Is this Democracy?
Currently in Iraq, there are three main parties vying for control in Iraq, the majority Shiite party (thousands killed because of their religious beliefs under the Hussein Regime), the Sunni party (formerly Saddam Hussein's party) and the Iraqi Kurds in the North of Iraq (thousands chemically gassed and killed after the 1st Gulf War out of dissidence). Yet, somehow, Bush believes a democratic system will be put in place via negotiations between these parties. Impossible.
This situation is ripe for a civil war, after all, we’re dealing with RELIGION before GOVERNMENT.
This modern “war against terrorism” will not end soon. We must realize that there are WAY too many variables in place here, too many “hard heads” (like Mr. Rumsfeld) et al (Arabic) implicated. Our disintegrating relationship with countries like North Korea, Syria, Iran will sooner than later affect us on a personal basis, whether it be via gas prices or dirty bombs.
My two cents…
