Can anyone tell me the best fta to buy and the safest place to buy it? I have a dish 500 dish with a legacy quad lnb setup. I heard that some fta's won't work with the legacy lnb. Is that true? I'm thinking about upgrading to the superdish as well.

Coolsat 400 pro is the best to get....it is gettin up in price but it is worth it.

Just type it in a search and check out the sites that come up......

Get a Dreambox my friend DB7020S. With channel change speed and EPG it kicks butt. Buy from an authorized dealer for support. The only other box in its class is a Triple Dragon, but is is new with very little suppot.

viewsat has a faster cpu then coolsat, dreambox being even faster. i recommend a fast cpu too keep up over time.

Bought a Coolsat Pro 4000. Couldn't get it to scan properly. Diseq switch and motor would not work either. Sent it back for repair. In the mean time, bought a Megasat Pro (Coolsat clone?). Was up and running in 10 minutes. Diseq works fine, Auto scans faster than Cooolsat. Only cost me $109. Coolsat sucks, Megasat Rocks!!! Gonna get another!

I've heard alot of good things about Viewsat. I do agree you might need a faster processor and it has 16meg of memory compared to 8 of others. It also has the fastest channel changing and best EPG and is reasonable in price. Just don't get a Pansat 2500 get the 2700 at least.

How do you people feel about Pansat support (or in my case lack of)?

Don't buy anything now, wait a few more weeks. The coolsat 5000 is coming next month. The coolsat pro 4000 will discontinue.

If you're not in dire straits, wait until Nag2 is fully implemented. Some doom 'n' gloom re: speeding up the data stream possibly causing problems for some receivers.

As far as STB's go:
Viewsat is the best, with the fastest chip, and biggest memory, CoolsatPro 4000 is close. They both have a common interface to add a smartcard later if needed. (with the Coolsat it's an option, however)
The newer Panarex units are also good, and Pansat support has continued even for their older models. (Something Fortec can not boast of) They dropped suport on the Lifetime quite some time ago.

Lately, Coolsat's been the slowest of the lot, but still in good time with releases.

The PCI cards are very nice, as you can capture to your hard drive, and unparalleled flexability, but the downside is that you need to have a pretty much dedicated PC tied up to watch TV, and operation is slightly more complex than the relatively plug and play STB's.
Just like emulation wasn't for everybody in the H and Hu days, the pci cards aren't for everyone either.

re: Pansat support. If you mean support with software to hack Dick, it's been top notch IMO, and a leader for a while now. If you mean Panarex won't fix the box that you had "illegal" firmware loaded on, I suggest you give your head a shake.

If they can be ecmed, how can you fix them if they don't have j-tag slots. This may be a dumb question, but I don't know much about fta receivers. Just want to find out before I buy one.

Doubt they can be killed by Dish via ECM. They can be flashed via serial port on the back of the receiver. There are "kill" bin's out there though that can kill some receivers, and at that time you can make a JTAG to reflash it.

sounds like you just got a defective one, i got a coolsat and a lot of posts told me
i couldnt use my legacy quad lnb, but i hooked it up anyway and it works great, took me only about 10 minutes to setup, only thing is sometimes a channel may take 2-3 seconds to come in, but still better than nothing, i have heard a lot of good things about dreambox, wil probably get one for my spare room

I have a superdish. Not sure what lnb I have. It came when they set up dish. Anyway if I buy the coolsat or Dreambox, will I need to buy another lnb or anything extra to flash them with?

I have a fortec lifetime ultra, it seems to take a bit of time for the program discription to come in on the guide. Just wondering if other receivers are the same. Or if some receivers are faster than others for channel info. I am thinking of buying a second receiver and wish to know other oppinions. Thanks
