Before you buy any FTA device, step one, look at your original dish antenna to determined if you got legacy lnbs, DP lnbs, or TWIN/QUAD fatboy lnbs. Go to link, [url]http://www.dssftp.com/forum/t49469-useful-for-people-with-questions-about-what-lnbs-and-dishs-work.html[url] for pictures and guide. If your sat dish antenna is TWIN/QUAD fatboy you need to install a set of linbs that is compatiable for FTA. If you a compataible set of lnbs then, step two, next is this a quick guide to FTA devices (FTA irds and DVB computer cards).
You can buy:
for the price...a Pansat clone like Megasat or Pantec because they are the cheapest, but remember you pay only a little so do not expect alot.
for flexibility...get Dreambox.
for ease of use ...get Coolsat, but you will have to live with Scramble and/or Bad Channels problems.
for reliability...get Pansat.
for being most sophisticated...get Triple Dragon.
for pvr/tivo features...get DVB computer pci card-- Nexus, Twinhan, or Skystar.
or ease of use ...get Coolsat, but you will have to live with Scramble and/or Bad Channels problems.Never a problem here, on ly when signal goes bad from weather:)

Main thing with FTA is to run the disc switch and sep LNB's. The don't seem to work well with dp pro even though they advertise they do.

And for something cheaper than Coolsat but has better EPG and great support get Viewsat.

stay away from clones of anything...lots of pissed off people from the Magic days and the latest FTA fiasco
but wait...i read somewhere that the hack for dave is "just around the corner"......uh-oh..you know what that means right?

as far as your dish....consider getting at least a dish 500......if you want to get the most out of your fta unit......86 the dish 500 suggestion.........get a 31" to 40" dish... a desqc motor.....one dss lnb...one ku linear lnb...and whatever fta receiver you decide is in your best interest...check out sadoun.com.....they have a very ample array of dishes and setups in packages very affordable

i have a viewsat plat. and have used both a twin dish pro(no switch is needed) and 2 single legacy lnbs. only thing with dp is you need a channel list thats been setup for them. with legacy you dont even need a channel list.
if you need to buy a dish dont get a dish 500 get a 30 inch or bigger.
